(yet another) Cam Position Sensor question

Hi folks - please don't kill me for being a newbie and asking the same question for the thousandth time, but searching the forums just proved that a lot of people confuse the cam position sensor with the crank position sensor. OBD2 is giving me a P0341 and I'm inclined to trust that. So I would really appreciate it if someone could post a pic or describe the location of the CAMSHAFT position sensor in a W220 S500.

Thanks in advance!

Here is what it looks like:

Under $64 at autohausaz.com, pn 0232103037.

It's located on bank 1 (passenger side) on the front of the engine, relatively close to the idler pulley. Look for the connector (top of the image, it will have the wires going into it, that part of it is about an inch wide, well not quite that big) and you can find it.

Before you order the replacement, check yours out. I'm not sure about your engine, but on some they can get oil on them and that messes up the signal. Clean it up and it will work if that is the case. Otherwise it's a simple part to change.

But I agree with you if you've got the code for the Cam PS, that's the one to change. :)

Thanks Greg! I will take a look at it in the morning and see if some cleaning may do the job - I will admit I got a bit distracted by the "crank crank crank no start" that it suddenly started experiencing too.

Sigh - Of all my cars, my $500 pickup truck is the most reliable.

Here is where it fits, item 17

There are two seals in that area, the rear crankshaft oil seal and the front transmission oil seal. Is it getting oil on the sensor face or outside on the wiring? Is this oil transmission fluid or engine oil?

By contrast, and for the convenience of other members, the CRANKSHAFT position sensor is pictured below. Location of both the CAMSHAFT position sensor and the CRANKSHAFT position sensor are shown in Eric's link at post 4.

^I completely missed the Camshaft bit and read Crankshaft without thinking about it.

The OP asked about the crankshaft position sensor, and you gave him exactly that.

s430santafe brought up the camshaft position sensor. I know the matter can be confusing; your diagram showed both, and suggested an opportunity to picture both - which is great. As a result, I have added a bit to the writeups on both sensors in the Encyclopedia, to include this thread. I hope it makes matters clearer regarding two sensors carrying the abbreviation "CPS."

No harm, no foul. :eclipsee_steering:

The camshaft position sensor does get oil on it and this is not the cause of your problem. Your problem is the Crankshaft position sensor.

Is it throwing the code at 4k rpm under load or in park and simply revving the engine?

When you rev the engine whilst in park it hits a magic red line at 4k rpm, this is when the fuel safety shut off comes in to play and yes it will leave a cps code on the computer, it is normal and a safety device.

If it happens at 4k rpm whilst in drive with the car on the road then it is not normal as the ffs system should not kick in then.

I hope this answers your questions.
