Hi,
I had a trunk issue on my 2001 S430.It was not opening from with the switch on the driver side door. It was only being able to open with the key manually. After research here in the threads, I found out that it could be due to a leak in the equipment which closes the trunk. Sure enough, I found the black little round box defective. So, I took it out. Apply some super-glue and put it outside to dry. Accidentally, my son closed the trunk. Now, I can not open it, even with the key. Is there any way to open the trunk, in this case?
Please advise,as you could imagine, how frustrating this can be!!
Thanks.

trunk won't open

I thought the key wasn't working this week when I couldn't open the trunk with a dead battery. The MB guy came and showed me how to used the mechanical key correctly. Turn it all the way to the left. The roadside assistance and jump start were free. I asked him to replace the battery and he did for $165. Glad I did because he had to reset a lot things after taking out the old one.

Finally called MB roadside assistance. but the technician had no idead about this Mercedes. He looked all around, called back the MB assistance, but never could figure any thing out. As I stated, I took the black plastic box out for repair and then accidentlly closed the trunk. So, I know, metal key won't work, as there is no mechanism for it to work. Then, how can it got locked? what are the other option? Please, please give me some thoughts. Thanks.

I'm sorry for your troubles.

I would talk to a more senior Mercedes tech at the dealership. Usually, you can just go right up to the repair bay and talk shop with those guys for free. I usually bring donuts.

If you can't get your answer there, they can usually point you in the right direction.

If you're feeling bold, see below.

This might seem unrealted at first glance, but you might have to go through the rear seat to get to the trunk/boot. This details how to get the stuff out of the way and hopefully you can use the emergency "I'm trapped inside the trunk" latch to open it.

There is a good deal of things you have to remove, so good luck.

I'll try and get some diagrams on how to do this when I get home.

Not a bad suggestion, Gabby. He won't be able to "go through the rear seat" because the fuel tank is behind it, but he may be able to access the emergency button with a stick through the bass speaker hole (or perhaps there are several holes).

You mean, trunk door unlock?
It is locked up. I had the round black plastic accuator took out for repair and the trunk accidentely got locked. Now, since there is no mecahnism to open, I have no idead how to open. To my surprice, how can it got locked with out such michanism? I hope, I answered your question.
Thanks.

Best of luck. This seems rather involved. Please pay attention to the step numbers highlighted in blue and/or purple. Although I've tried to make this as easy as possible to follow, I have not done this myself and don't have much in the way of tips.

My question is this, if you removed the lock mechanism to super glue the problem so many of us have, how did your trunk lock without the latch? The part you superglue is attached to the latch that locks and you couldn't have re-assembled the piece without it. How did that happen? I've had trunk problems for a while and pretty familiar with this piece by now.

mechanical trunk lock

Unless I don't understand exactly what you have done, I believe you might have made this way more complicated than necessary. If all you removed was the hockey puck, then the mechanical latch should still be in place. If that is true, all you have to do is insert the manual key into the lock and turn it counterclockwise until the latch releases. The manual key is inserted into the back side of the remote, so just pull it out. Good luck.

trunk lock

Yes it is the circle lock with the key slot in the center...I don't think it should be glowing green, but it is not important. If you insert the mechanical key and turn it clockwise it operates the power assisted release, so nothing will happen. Turn the key COUNTERCLOCKWISE and it will release the mechanical latch directly.

trunk

1. Insert the mechanical key into the slot in the center of the circle lock.
2. Turn the key COUNTERCLOCKWISE. The lock should open.
3. If 2 does not work, do it again while pushing up on the circle lock.
4. Try various combinations of turning and pushing until it opens. It is mechanical and you will not hurt it.
5. It will be obvious when the key unlatches the lock. You will feel it and or hear it.

Hi friends,
As you explained, I opened the back cushion of the seat. But as skylak said, there is a fuel tank. There is no way to excess trunk or the locking mechanism from it.
Bob727 kept advising about using circle lock. That is the one, which is outside on the top of license plate between two bulbs, right? As that is not working, I am trying to find alternative solution.
Let me expalin one more time,
My trunk was not working with remote or switch from the driver side door. It would open only with the metal key,as explained by Bob727. After lot of reading I found, that the black plastic round box inside the locking mechanism could be broken. Sure enough, I found that is the one bad. When I press it hard, it would work. So, I took out that pastic round box, applied superglue and kept it out to dry completely. Accidently, my trunk closed and the latch got locked. This is where I got in trouble,as there is no mechanism working inside. Now, to add the frustration, today my bettery died, which is in the trunk as well. So, the car is sitting on my driway, DEAD.
I hope, I explained well enough to understand. I know, there have to be a way to overcome this sinario.
Any help is greatly appreciatd. Thanks.

This is making me nuts. Please just answer one question. After the trunk accidentally closed, did you try the metal key again by turning it to the left...counterclockwise? There is no reason it should not work. Please go try again and let me know what happens. But it absolutely will not work if you turn it to the right...clockwise.

Yes Bob,
I have tried that before even I serch for your help. It is common sense. That is how I used to open it. After inserting the metal key, when I turn it counterclockwise and push it up, it would open. Not anymore. That is why, I am seeking help from the pros.
Thanks for your time and kindness to help others'.

I've read through this thread and sadly, I cannot offer any real advice. You've gotten some great insight and suggestions, but sadly they're not working for you. With a dead battery, you'll have difficulty trying anything with power, though you could try to back-feed the system if you know where to add power. Across the trunk power fuse would do it, but then the mechanism is out so the addition of power is not going to help.

Going through the trunk is the best idea. But the gas tank is in the way so that limits your access. The emergency trunk unlock button inside the trunk is electronic. There is a flashing green light located right in the middle of the posterior vertical section of the trunk lid. If you could get a stick and work around the gas tank, and you could apply power, you might be able to push it. Whether this would work or not with the mechanism itself out, it questionable. If you could remove the read deck lid, you could probably gain access to the button with a stick. But, at least on my '06 S430, it's electronic.

I would expect the mechanical key to work. Turning and trying to force the trunk open. But then I don't know what latched there are other than the one you removed.

Have you asked the Mercedes service department? I know you don't want to take it there, and I don't blame you, but it sounds like a tow and service is going to be in order. Sometimes they have some pretty good tricks. I had a Porsche and has a problem where I locked the only keys I had in the trunk. A call to the Porsche service department and taking with two different technicians yielded information that I could get to a cable with a coat hanger from a specific spot under the car. That did the trick. This trick wasn't in any of the service manuals. I'm not saying that Mercedes has a similar trick, but if there is one, a good mechanic would know. Call a couple of dealer service departments and ask them. You can't be the first person that this has happened to.

Thanks Cinemagic,
I appreciate your inputs, sympathy and encouragement. I know, this is not easy, but to avoid the rediculous charges by the dealership, I am trying to find the solution here. Most of times, it has worked for me and has saved lot of money. The valuable insights on the forum are priceless. I got one question:
"If you could remove the read deck lid, you could probably gain access to the button with a stick."
In this, what do you mean by read deck lid? OR is it typing mistake?
Please advise.
Thanks again.

Typing error. Rear deck. Inside the car right behind the back seat. I opened my trunk to look for the exact position of the emergency trunk release. There appeared to be an opening in the metal right in the middle. Seems like it would be a straight shot to the button. An auto hi-fi store might know how easy it is to remove. It would be a good spot for a sub-woofer in a custom installation. I'm with you on avoiding the dealer. I just got screwed when my battery died. Skylaw posted some absolutely great reset procedures that all worked except one. The dealer got me for a now $560 part. I have a hard time believing them, but I was stuck. But see if they'll talk to you without the car. I like the donut trick. Ask the dealer who they recommend for an autobody shop. A good autobody shop may be able to tell you how to get in. They're usually more helpful and free with information than the dealer.

To get your battery up and running, there is another jump start location under the passenger side carpeting.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220-s-class/1406206-jump-starting-2001-s430.html

I would ask the MB Roadside to do this for you though, since its free and all. It also has the least chance of frying your car. They should know about this location too, please don't let them make excuses on this one.

After that, just drive the car for a bit to get your battery charged up. From there, you have many more options.
