What is good MPG?

I was on a long distance trip recently (about 1400 km round trip) and achieved aat one point 14.8 km/l or 34.8 MPG (US) or 41.8 MPG (UK) on the onboard dash computer. I drive a 2002 S320 W220 (petrol).

My dad says that is amazing mileage on a 3.2 litre engine.

My average speed was between 90 km/h to 100 km/h on the highway and I was at 2200 rpms generally and up to 3000 rpms occasionally for overtaking. I avoided racing.

Is the above mileage standard for most crusing W220s?

Thats fantastic for a V12 6 litre engine.

Have you had any problems with the cylinder shut off feature on your car ?

I recently averaged 83 mph over a stretch of 300+ interstate miles coming back from the Sebring races. My S430 averaged 25.2 mph during that run. I routinely average 22+ mpg in mixed driving. At 75-80 steady mph I usually get 27+. All this is with the AC on, cruise set when possible, and not paying particular attention to slow acceleration and other mileage-adding efforts.

Steady speed is key to good fuel efficiency. The repeated acceleration and deceleration is what wastes fuel, as in city driving.

Those are some impressive numbers you guys reported.

300 Mile run

Drove up to see the Space Shuttle launch. It was 300 miles of highway light traffic. Cruise cointrol at 70 MPH and got 27.6 MPG

btw What a sight seeing the Huge Shuttle lift off in dawn darkness...

Just did a round trip from Toronto, Canada to New York, New York cruise control at 80mph there and back and my 06 S430 4matic returned 25.3 mpg, I am happy, although a very comfortable drive this car can put you to sleep at 80mph soo smooth and stable

Nice to hear, fellas. I drive from the San Diego area to Orange County pretty regularily, and none of my associates believe me that I average 25 MPG+ at 75MPH in my S430- I do better than many much smaller, more "economical" cars

Around town, with my over-developed right foot, however, is an entirely different matter! And you don't even want to know the numbers my wife sees in the M5...
