advice buying a 2000 S430 needs work

Hello everyone I am a newbie here to the forum, but no stranger to the MB world. I currently have a 1998 E430 that I maintain very strictly.
I have a local credit union selling a 2000 S430. It needs some attention. The brakes were abused so bad the rears have a hole in them, yes a hole. They tell me it had large wheels on it before the repo.
The suspesion has some issue with sagging while sitting for a period of time. The mileage is 97,000 and I know there was no service done during it life with this owner.
exhaust is hanging down and it has a few dings and scratches around the car.
Now that being said I can do all the work and service.
Where in the world do I come up with a fair or shall I say accurate offer.??
Give me your input, PLEASE!!

1. Do you have a Star Diagnosis System?

2. Do you have the $ to fix it?

3. Do you really want it?

The Benz is a simplistic three-pointed star that represents its domination of the land, the sea, and the air.

money to fix it yes
star diagnostic nope
really want it, well I am always a sucker for a challenge.
I am hoping to get it at a good price. Nobody else has put in a bid sheet and it closes in 6 days.
Just trying to see what an appropraite offer shall be?

Don't buy it because airmatic is $1,700 a piece for each shock (not including labour). I almost bought my car from the US but later found out they gonna slap on $6,000 upgrades to bring it to Canada. I purchased my S500 from a locally dealership with no problems. Your S500 also has high mileage, the amount of money you put to fix it will probably be more than buying one that is in good and working condition. Sometimes cheap things come with a catch.

My friend purchased a S500 from an auction, he paid $25,000 for it when we received the vehicle, all the bose speakers were removes, interior panels were all damaged, there is bondo all over the car (they tried to fix it, but didn't finish the job), there was no power going to the doors, and you can't even open the trunk. He thought he would be getting a running car, but looked like it came out of a junk yard. This taught us a lesson, the pictures on the internet were deceiving.

You didn't tell us where you live - information that can affect the market for the car.

However, entering kbb with my zip code, a car with that mileage is worth about $7600 in "fair" condition from a private seller - which is perhaps the best it would be rated now.

Plan on a minimum of $550 parts & labor to replace upper front strut seals, if that's all that's wrong. Arnott offers new replacement struts that have much better airbags and seals than OE - $800 each for new, $400 each for remanufactured. A new Airmatic pump is about $300, plus as much again for labor.

Since you are doing your own work, you could make the airmatic repairs yourself for between $150 (seals only) to $2,000 (remo) or $3500 (all new).

The exhaust system may need replacement - or just new hangers. $50 to $1500.

Check out the car's electronics! See if the COMAND and nav work; see if the audio system works. It's likely you'll need an entirely new phone retrofit (depending on what you have now, it could run from a $500 to $750 DIY). Check that control switches work (if none of the dashboard switches work, you're looking at replacing SAMs, $600 each and there are 3 of them). Check your window and seat controls (if they don't work, it's door control modules one per nonworking door, - around $300 each).

Add up the cost of problems, and subtract from $7600.

I'd have that thing looked over with a microscope if possible before making an offer. If this car has never been serviced there are bound to be issues that are not readily apparent. You say the Credit Union is local so hopefully the car is as well and you can see it in person. I have 2000 S430 and have put a bunch of $ and work into the car and I got it as a creampuff owned by an old lady. I love it and I understand that's part of owning one of these. But I'd say if you can scrape up a little more loot try to get a 2003 so it'll have some of the updates they did with the remodel. It'll save you some (not all) headaches.

well I looked at it today. It was quite funny as they said there was a valve tick in the motor, I know better than that. I opened the oil fil cap and OH MY GOSH, it had and inch of sludge just at the cap. I could only imagine how much sludge is in the engine. The body was not bad at all. The interior would need about 300 to 500 bucks of odds and ends, but looked good. The brakes were shot all around.
I just threw them a bid of 2k and I will see.
I would pull the engine myself and go through it. it has more labor involved than parts.
I feel sorry for the sap who beats me out and thinks they jost got a steal of a deal!!!!

uhm.. that's how much working ones go for around here. and they still can't sell them.

unless you meant the rough repair costs, which are correct as far as parts go.

i would do it if you want to work on it. if you are going to pay somebody else to do it for you, i see no point

actually im joking, i would run away like a fire truck to a fire call. brakes with holes?! don't even touch that engine. you are better off ebaying something blind.

vw phaeton. when vw copies mercedes, but forces you to service it next to golfs and jettas
