Center Console Controls Mysteriously Dead

I have a 2000 S 500. Without any symptoms the buttons on the dash surrounding the red hazard button simply stopped working. This inculdes unlock, hazard, airmatic, etc...all of them (about 8 or 9). Since they all seem like a component, is this fuse related? Some advice on where to start would be great!

Reviewed fuse charts and inspected fuses in all locations. All colored fuses look fine. Curious...wouldn't the fuse be just for that function/circuit? I'm wondering if there is a disconnected plug for that "bundle" of wires.
If the blinkers work...why doesnt the hazard button work (not illuminated either). No power to all the led's in switches either. Thinking if I fix one thing the whole sha-bang will work again.

Would anyone know where I might look for that wire bundle or how to take the wood trim off to inspect switches and wires right there?

You need STAR

The new SAM unit had to be SCN coded for it to function properly.

It has to be done with "DAS" or "STAR". Meaning the old information sucked out, then after the new one is installed it is reloaded with the info pulled out of the defective unit.

UPDATE: This was not a SAM issue at all. It was the console switches themselves. The switch asembley is made of 3 components that plug together to incorporate all buttons. The middle part has the hazard button and that is the common component. the other options plug into the left and right side of the middle part. That way, if you dont have ...say rear shade...you don't need that part of the switch. Just experiment with this before you start ripping out SAM's and worrying about programming and stuff.

Thats why when a car comes in I scan it with STAR so it will tell me the switches are bad.

I can't scan cars over the internet (yet). So we go with the most likely causes. Glad you got it fixed though! Next time, take it to a INDE and have them scan it. IT WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG!

Just in case anyone is still following this thread and can offer advice.... W220- everything works in the centre console except the headrest release button. (I recently changed the headrest release actuators behind the rear seat and hoses and re-activated headrest release on the PSE using STAR - it had been turned off when one of the actuators failed. The headrest release works via STAR but not via the button on the dashboard).

But there don't appear to be any error messages associated with it. I've dismantled the unit and will see what I can figure out by comparing the resistance in the controls that work vs the one that doesn't... any other suggestions?

I have the same problem with the switches. I have a 2002 S430, the problem is that on the driver's side the ESP switch dosn't work. On the passenger's side the rear screen shade and tow alarm dosn't work. If anyone has the part #'s for these, I would greatly help me. I do most of the work myself, don't want to get screwed at the stealership. Thanks in advance!

re: follow up to post 17, in case anyone else has a similar problem... my headrests would go down using STAR, but not from the dashboard control. I seem to have solved my problem, although I'm not entirely sure how/why. I found the sub-menu under a sub-menu on STAR under "actual values" (I think it was) for "Upper Control Panel" for “Check component N72/1s4 (Rear restraints switch) using actual value”. When I press the switch in the centre console, it changes from "NOT OPERATED" to "OPERATED", so I knew my switch was fine. And then I heard the glorious sound of the headrests falling with a thunk.

But I have no idea why the switch works now, but didn't before. I didn't activate anything between it "not working" and "working". In the meantime I'd dismantled the dash enough to get the switches out and check them, so maybe I fortuitously bumped a wire in the right direction? Although that could mean that the system is likely to stop working again anytime soon. (But it’s a bit temperamental. It seems to fall about every 3rd press of the button, regardless of how long I press it for... even though STAR registers every press).

That's because your PSE can't cope, so it times out, soft close doors will do this, like if you have kids and they are fascinated by the soft close, so they open / shut repeat repeat, then it stops working

It's to stop the PSE barbecuing itself ;)

Then it will start to work again after a while ;)

In real life we don't run the headrests up and down that often, so everything is hunky dory ;)

So are there any "Time Out" Codes on SDS ?
