Hello everyone! Has anyone attempted to repair their instrument cluster? I saw on ebay that there is a transformer and 2 transistor for sale. By replacing these, the instrument light will return to normal.

I took the whole instrument cluster apart, but somehow I can take off the white plastic frame that holds all the fluorescent back lights from the PC board.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I have a 2000 Mercedes S430 with 161,500 miles on it!

Hi

I have an S500 and I have the Instrument Cluster out but I am having trouble with disassembly.

Sounds Like you have got further than me.
Please post pics of how you got the black plastic cover off and maybe I can figure how to get the next bit done.

In the meantime I am searching the Internet for Info.

Any help from othere members would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Possibly, it is a power switching transistor (N Channel MOSFET) that you need to replace. The part number is BUZ102S made by Infineon.

You'll need to remove the cluster and unplug it. If your cluster is like mine, you'll notice a part that is loose right away. It is the BUZ102S that has fallen off the small power distribution board on the rear of the cluster. There are two large slots on each side of the rear of the cluster. Beneath them are two connectors. Unplug those connectors, then use a small flat head screwdriver to remove the back casing of the cluster. Use a T12 driver to remove the circuit board from the casing. Now you have the board completely removed and and ready to repair.

Important Tech Note
There are three BUZ102S ICs on the board. They all supply power to the instrument cluster and work in parallel. It is important to replace all of them at once. Here's why: When the first IC falls off the board the other two try to compensate by supplying more current. The additional work load causes the transistors to saturate. During this saturation phase, instrument cluster lights flicker on and off. Eventually one of the transistors fails or short circuits. When that happens, the 5A circuit fuse blows. This circuit fuse protects not only the instrument cluster back-lights, but also the guages, the parktronic, the remote truck opener, and the command back lighting. Because you cannot visually tell which transistor has failed, you must replace all three of them at once.

Use a desoldering braid and a 40W soldering iron to remove the ICs. Then carefully solder each new IC to finish the repair. Reassemble the instrument cluster and install. Before testing, locate the 5A protection fuse mentioned above. There should be a fuse diagram sheet with the tool kit located in the trunk of the vehicle. Replace the 5A fuse and test.

Hi

I finaly got my black plastic cover off by removing two silver screwa just to the inside and below the the two outside beige lamp holder units then carefully and progressivly releasing the 7 plastic tabs using a couple of flat blade screwdrivers. You must also pull the power plug at thr back above theMain Connector.

I found that I do not have BUZ102S IC's on my board I have BUK9624 and BUK7624 55A IC's, also my Transforme is different from those being offered on the Internet and there appear to be 2 Transformer units.
My Car is second hand so I think the Unot must have already been changed. I has a sticker that implies a date of 20-08-05.

Does anyone know which parts I should change and where I might get them ?

Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks

I did see those and they are in the same package but the specifications are different, also the Transformers being offered on Internet and E-bay some with a set of BUZ102S's look different.
It looks like I have a different version than those that normaly Fail.

Does anyone know wher I can get a Circuit diagrams for the various incarnations ? and or detailed repair instructions.

Thanks for any assistance

Google Circuit Solutions, there located in Moscow Idaho. They repaired my s600 instrument cluster & it cost $159 plus shipping in both drirections. Total cost was $248. I recieved it back in 8 days, has a five year warranty & works great.
Hello,

Can you please tell if your complete instrument cluster was dead. In my case even the gauges like speedometer, fuel, rpm gauge, turn indicator on cluster etc. nothing is working. Everything was working fine before and there was no flicker etc. I just came in the car one morning and cluster was all dead.

Thanks,

Sunit

The fuse is located in the engine compartment, back driver side corner. Also once you take the cover off you'll see a run of 3 or 4 5amp fuses. I'm going to say it's between f 20 & f22 in the box. The easiest way is just to pull the fuse & check for the break. Just a note my fuse diagram was located with the tool kit located on top of the spare tire. I replaced the fuse prior to fixing the instrument cluster & it would only last about 5 minutes & pop the fuse again. Also the lights never did come back during those few minutes, only the instrument worked. Lastly I also looked on line for buz components & found then to be alittle expensinve & hard to find, thought it would be easier & more economical to just send out.

Hi

I'm trying to repair the cluster module from my brothers W220 S-Class which also blew the 5A fuse.

When I removed the cluster, I noticed that one of the BUZ102S transistors had dropped off the top smaller invertor PCB, probably due to excessive heat.

I have managed to source some replacement transistors, but not BUZ102S as these seem expensive. Instead I am using some equivalent and much cheaper STP60NF06L transistors.

I sourced these from Farnell

However, on the underside of the top PCB the transistors sit on, I noticed that a large SMD resistor had a crack through the middle of it, and a scorch mark. Obviously down to heat.

The problem is that I cannot read the markings on the resistor fully, I can only make out 2R - it looks as though there are two more digits there that I cannot see.

A bit unusual for this kind of circuit, normally standard rated resistors like 2R2 or 2R7 are used 'unless' a degree of accuracy is required. It seems to be the case here.

Could someone please advise what the value of the resistor should be?

I also plan to use some small heatsinks on the transistors, I am happy to share with some pictures.

Thanks

I just finished repairing my cluster with a new high voltage transformer.

Here are the tricks:
Take the cluster out, I carefully used a thin coat hanger.

Start taking it apart, the first circuit board comes off easily, the speed needle lifts off, unplug the strap.

Take out the message module

the tach, fuel and temp needles lift off, pry off carefully and slowly,

snap out the sleeves in those holes to remove the black face.

You need to remove the 3 flourecent lamps by unsoldering them, be gentle and take your time. There is also 1 LED to unsolder

Now you can get the board off and replacee the transformer.

Replace the lamps, take the time to clean off all the old solder so the holes are clear.

Re assemble and your done. I got the part on Ebay for $22.

PM me if you have questions.

If you live in the US it is under recall unit 2013

If you live in the U.S., Mercedes will replace your unit for free until 2013. The recall includes all W220 and W215 head units. If you look under recall campaigns they will replace both the ABC pressure line if equipped with hydro-electric suspension and the head unit.

Mercedes has not set one specific date at which repairs will end. The extended U.S. warranty runs until 10 years from the date of initial service of the car. Some models are therefore past the warranty date; others still have more time. The subject is covered in the W220 S-Class Encyclopedia.

idahombz, see post #21above. The document setting forth the extended warranty is in the Encyclopedia links. The subject has been extensively covered.

kevinlfifer, same for you. Your car is certainly beyond the 10 year extended warranty and it preceded the recall that was also in effect for designated VINs by a year - so neither the recall nor the extended warranty will help you. The Encyclopedia has links to sites that can repair your cluster far more inexpensively than buying a new one.

I would contact the NTSA and inquire. They might be able to help. I didn't realize there was ever an expiration for a safety recall. You learn something new every day. I know Federal laws are different than California laws. Emissions systems are covered 2 years longer in CA than in the other States.

If you read through the materials in the Encyclopedia, you will see that the recall campaign only applied to certain model years and VINS. Post 24 mentions this. The recall applied to certain 2000-2002 and 2004-2005 models, by VIN. It has not expired, but it is limited. Contact NHTSA all you want - the information won't change. BTW - the links to the NHTSA information on the recall are in the information provided in the Encyclopedia.

The extended warranty is a separate matter, but had an expiration. Again, the Encyclopedia discusses it and contains copies of the original MB documents and links to the full discussion of the topic - which was beaten to death for a very long time ago.

There is no need to rewrite what has already been thoroughly covered, and no need to speculate. Please just read it.

SadieBaby, having done this repair I will say it is very doable. So long as you can solder you will have no trouble. Remember that the needles when replaced can stick if you have pushed them on a little to far.

SadieBaby don't worry about the removal tools unless you can get them cheap, I made my own from an old hacksaw blade see attached. As for the screwdriver I think it was a T4 or T5 not sure which may have even been a T6, just get a set of small torx. Now the transformers the red one is the main one that need replacing, but while your there might as well do the BUZ102S there is more then 3 of them. The transformers you need "A" or "B" you will need to open the cluster and check them first, depending on the year of your car (most likely you will need the "B" as this is for after 2000 so only the earliest W220 used the "A") you may be able to guess the right ones (Some sites have the years for each listed). Some are cheap
some are not.
Check these youtube videos out it is explained well enough to understand, this is to the first 1 of 5.

Best of luck with it.

Dean

So I've got it all open and I noticed the BUZ102s translator fell off my question is will replacing that solve my backlight issue or will I still have to go in and change the VOTG B transformer as well? The transformer looks fine from what I can see and it save me a great deal of hassle if its just the translators.
