I am in the process of buying a 2001 S600. I put the down payment on it so I'm pretty well committed to it.
I've heard so many horror stories in Benzworld.org that I was wondering if ANYBODY was happy with theirs and had minimal problems.
Although the Mercedes dealer is working off any problems discovered during diagnostics, I'm still wondering if it is inevitable that I'm doomed to regret the purchase.
I know that there are some members that have nothing but doom and gloom stories but there's GOTTA be someone who's happy.
Will those people please step forward and tell me what a pleasure it is owning an S600? Thanks!!

all in all i loved the car, but if you plan on keeping it for more than a year, be prepared to pay. The car was fine for the first two years i owned it but after that it was all downhill. Endless misfiring, changed 24 plugs twice, two ignition modules at 1600 a pop, maf sensor, and some other things i just cant think of right now. The ABC pump was also on its way out (it was whining) which i got quoted at the dealer for about 3500 or so. On top of all that the pse pump (i think thats what its called) that controls the soft close feature was not working properly, got quoted 1500 for that. My gas needle would never go to full, the sender unit needed to be replaced, 1200. I added up all the repairs and decided to trade it in, i got next to nothing for it, but am i ever glad i dont have to deal with anymore issues. Even after all that motor work it still misfired under heavy load. Since its an 01 and only has 60 more hp than the 500 of that year, i STRONGLY recommend you go with a S500.
I wouldn't keep one without warranty but if i were to get one it would DEFINITELY be a 03+.
thats just my take, im sure there are ppl out there that havent had as many problems as me, but go to mbworld or even this forum and search "S600 misfire" that should be enough to change your mind. If i can do it again, i would have got a S500 with comparable options.

Good luck with whatever you do
Thanks for the warnings but I'm afraid that I'm committed to it.
Maybe some other happy owners will paint a better picture.
Thanks again!!
They are beautiful, extremely nice cars! Just have a few maintenance querks but the money is worth spending keeping such a beautiful car on the road. Congrats on the purchase!

Yes- if he CAN get out and get an 03+, more power to him, but he might be stuck and it isnt THAT bad of a car. wait a minute I forgot the later years were TT, go for 03+
As I said, I'm pretty committed to buying it as I've put a small deposit down and signed some papers to hold it until they're(buying from MB dealership) through fixing an oil leak in an area of the engine they call the valley(surprise, oil leak!).
I've bought from this dealership before and REALLY like them and don't want to pimp them out or incur legal wrath.
Do the 03+ TT have the the dreaded oil cooler? Wouldn't ABC problems, leaks and electrical issues be the same as on the 2001?
I have heard the horror stories and any positive stories would raise my spirits.
in 2003, the whole W220 line was revamped, the S500 and below received improved airmatics, and im almost certain the S600 and S-AMGS received better ABC as well as general engineering and twin turbo chargers.
That oil leak already doesnt sound too good, whats the scoop on that?
The sales rep said while doing diagnostics and completely going over the car to check for problems(after I put down the deposit) , that they found an oil leak on the engine. I asked if it was the oil cooler and he replied that the cooler was fine but the leak was by some plate near/above the main seal. Said that they were fixing it but normally it is a $4800 job.
It is a one owner car with average miles. I have all the repair receipts and know who the previous owner was.
I don't live in the state where I'm purchasing it(no,I didn't buy it on eBay) but tracked the owner as being a doctor there, who kept it the whole time. How uncouth would it be to contact him before the sale and get the low-down?
