I like your attitude, I think spending $8k in 5 years on a $100k car is totally acceptable. These cars are definitely worth it.
It seems that these are the most prevailing expensive items (ABC issues and oil cooler) and they won't need to be done again. The car is a joy to drive and although I've test driven several new(er) cars, none give me that great feeling and driving experience that S600 does.
I have an immaculate 00 600, full spec. 140K miles on the clock, had it only a few months and its excellent. I have all the history from new from previous owner and with the exception of the ABC pump the rest of items replaced are either as part of service or what you would expect of any car of its age. new cat system, disks, pads etc. I was like you when I first got it, looked at the forums and though what the hell have i done, so when I fisrt started to drive it any change in engine tone (when u can hear it) and start thinking, god there goes the plugs, the coil etc, suspension moves...there goes the ABC...thump going over speedbumps....link arms gone...no, wifes shopping rolling around in the trunk!
enjoy it, and yes most people on the MB forums are either there for advise due to faults or tuners/modders.
but I will say get a good non main dealer expert. they only cost a lot to fix because of MB's labour rates.
the only cash I have spent since getting was 2 new tyres for the MOT, and had the bonnet resprayed (stone chips) and a rear arch done (typical MB rust) now she looks like she came off the production line yesterday inside and out

Still early times but its been 6 months now and I love every moment with my S600 with no regret.
I took a SL500 (05) for a test-drive the other day and I was soooo disappointed, the ride is hard and there's just no power, then took a SL65 for a test-drive wow..... what a car!!

glad to hear it, since i put my post on I have since put a new coil pack on at 150K miles on it now I dont think thats bad life span, i also had bottom ball joints jone but that was out of choice, there was a little vibration at speed only noticable because the S class is such a smooth ride.
