See the link below, more than you will ever want to know.
I'm experiencing the same problem in my 2000 S430.
About a week ago I heard a ticking sound from below the glove box for a few days, then the AC would not blow any air out whatsoever. After another day it came back on. It went out shortly after, then came back on again. It's been on since, but the ticking noise continues. Is this what you faced? And how did you repair it?
Ticking noise from blower motor usualy brush contact on commutator /worn brushes/ partialy siezed motor, strip motor down clean it lube it, make sure theres enough carbon brush, put back together done it myself 2 year ago motor still running now, one thing to remember when putting plastic shroud on motor(white) make sure the cooling duct faces the brush area i made the mistake of putting it on wrong, it caused the motor to overheat and then the regulator would cut the supply until it cooled off again, easy job really.
Details: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. DUE TO AN INTERNAL DEFECT IN THE CIRCUITRY OF THE BLOWER MOTOR REGULATOR, THE REGULATOR MAY OVERHEAT.
Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE SURROUNDING PLASTIC, INSULATION, AND WIRING TO DEFORM AND POSSIBLY MELT OR BURN.
Corrective Action: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BLOWER MOTOR REGULATOR.
Units Potentially Affected: 7100
Recall Initiated By: MFR
Date added to NHTSA datbase: 05/22/2000
paul murphy, great suggestion.
the dealership suggested it would cost me over $1200 to replace.
The pump works occasionally and sometimes not. Ticking noise is still present. I'm thinking your solution might work.
How would I go about accessing it and the steps to getting there?
Start by removing upper footwell trims on passenger side a few screws nothing technical, this will expose fan assembly which has the fan resistor fixed to it, remove four more screws (these hold the fan to the foot well) (one screw at the rear of the fan is a bit awkward shine a torch up and you will see it) then lower fan down disconnect plug and that's it really. Spin fan by hand and listen for noises and feel for tightness, remove plastic shrouds/resistor and anything else that's easily removed, my motor was real tight due to water ingress, bearings had dried out, looking at the motor at the brush end you need to uncrimp the lugs on the end cap (a pair of side cutters will do) don't cut them off just bend them out the way and the end cap will come off exposing the brushes, give it a good clean and grease the bearings if your brushes are down to the metal you could try and make a pair out of a vacuum /hoover parts (easily modified) mine still had life in them but where sticking, as long as you have 5 or 6 mill left that will still fun for a long time, when your happy everything looks OK put it all back, two things to remember keep both brushes pulled back and kept back when your putting end cap on, then release them when cap is secure, other thing it to remember to put the plastic cooling duct from the brush area to the fan the right way take pictures if it helps, don't be put off by anything its not as hard as you might think, Paul m.
Hi. Thanks for your detailed description of how to gain access to the blower fan motor. When I tried I could not get to the Torx screws that hold the black casing for the blower fan motor. I found that some dashboard was in the way, I also had the glove box removed to no avail.
Am I missing something that allows me to get better access?
Also, I struggled getting into this footwell area in such a position to see properly.
