Nice thread and thanks for that, BUT do you really understand what you have just pasted? I doubt it. Why;

1. There is no mention of ride hight adjustment and the use of star D. This could lead to tyre wear and tyre's are not cheap.

2. There is no mention of the relay replacement and this is an important factor/safeguard. The original relays go faulty and can cause the pump to run on for too long - hence burnout.

3. There is no mention of diagnostics and fault finding first. A pump fails but why? Something caused the pump to fail, so that has to be addressed first of all and fixed.

4. There is no mention of wheel alignment after pump replacement, this is a total amature thing with pics, sorry but it makes me angry, if you are going to do a job then do it right.:mad:

ok, more detailed post (I wasn't asking for a how-to for the pump), regatrding your points 1 to 4 above:

1. How is it done. May it be done DIY.

2. See above

3. Ok, most probably to be left for the dealer. But any good guesses?

4. To be left for the dealer?

For testing purposes you should be able to swap it with almost any in that box.

Had a noisy Airmatic Pump now for around 6 months. Looked quite an easy fix! (until eric stepped in:crybaby2:! Thinking twice now. Was gonna just try and replace old for new and see what happens!)

Anyways....:p

Have been meaning to buy and replace the pump since it started but still havent got round to it.
Yesterday though, I thought id have a look at the pump to see if the noise coming from it was maybe the pump needing tightened because the bolts have came loose.

Trouble is though, when beginning to remove the cover under the right front fender, the first 2 bolts I tried to remove sheered off!
So just put the wheel back on and left it for another day.
Has anyone any tips how to remove the cover without snapping the bolts or will I just have to live with that and drill new holes for the cover to bolt on to?

Do not be discouraged, most of the W220's I get have the lower panels held on with bag ties:(

It is a very easy fix when the car is up on the lift, I have not tried to do one on the floor though:)

Hi Eric.

Tried yesterday.
Managed to remove right wing cover. Realised I had to remove the cover under the front bumper too. Noticed that the 3 threaded rods with bolts that hold the pump were rusted so squirted a little WD40 onto the 3 bolts.
Tried to unscrew the bolts but they were really tight and I didnt want to shear the holding rods off of the car. Besides it was getting dark, and it was ready to rain.
I gave the bolts a generous amount of WD40 and hopefully when I go to try the bolts again they should be easier to remove.
Im doing this with the front right wheel jacked up, lying on the ground and it is a little fiddley.

Im hoping to try this again at the weekend.

Im thinking if I held the rods with a set of grips and and tried to unscrew the bolts that this would work and less likely to bend or break of the rods!

So fingers crossed.:thumbsup:

Im thinking of taking it to the local garage with all the panels removed and see if they will put it up on the lift and do this for me.
if I do this they may only charge a few sheckles!!!:cool:

Took it to the garage.
Been about 6 months with the noisy pump and started getting Stop Now, Airmatic Low warnings in Red, so thought i mght as well get the garage to put the one I bought on now rather than being stranded somewhere.
Gave them my car.
ÂŁ40 later all fixed and all is well.:thumbsup:

Posts: 19 ok guys
here is what i discovered today;
i disconected the big black rubber hose from airmatic pump and with engine on pump was runnind and pushed (blowed )the air out.it needs actually suck the air in.
than i removed the small white/clear hard hose from the pump.now that part where the black hose connects finely started suck air in.and the small hose openning was blowing.
i think this is the way it needs to work/am i wright??
after installing the small white hose back on the bigger black one started to blow air out again-wrong why is this happening???
the pump runs about 2 minutes and than stops .
i had :car too low stop"n a display i had to disconect the battery many times to reset and repump the car to some hight.but i know this is not the answer???
does anyone know how to fix it???
could be therer some trash in a valve body which does not air in and causes to redirect air blow out the oposit direction??
thanks

Already asked this before, Sorry for the repost

I have a 2000 S430 black, beautiful car. I had just ran over a dead deer last week and I know something got messed up because my airmatic compressor always runs now, when I left to go to work today I notice the warning light for the airmatic is on. I pull over and notice the front end is pretty much riding on the ground and the compressor is still running and is not raising the car. I do assume I have a leak somewhere or maybe even the compressor is bad I have no clue and cannot afford a mechanic to fix this. Any suggestions or troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

First of all do not continue to use the car, if the pump is running all the time it will eventually burn out and this is an expensive part. As the pump does run it shows the pump is OK.

Looks like you have a very large air leak somewhere, thing to do now is lift the car and take down the splash guards and then look for damage/leaks, here is a diagram to help you;
