Cost of having brakes replaced... 2001 S500

Hi guys I was wondering around how much does it usually cost to get your brakes replaced on the 2001 s500.

My brakes are screeching when I back up and starting to screech when I brake going forward. I really don't want to get screwed by the stealership if I can pay less at somewhere(reputable) else.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

If you're handy, you can DIY. Pads are around $200 and up, and rotors are about $400 and up aftermarket. I have no idea what the stealer will charge for MB OEM parts. Tack labor on top of that if you pay to have it done. Your rotors may or may not need changing but the noise you describe makes the case they probably will. You can't turn MB rotors; they have to be replaced when they wear below tolerances.

If you DIY, make sure you know what you are doing. The brake system is under high pressure and that pressure has to be relieved or you'll have brake parts squishing soft body parts while you work.

Just whatever you do, don't try to save a few bucks and go to a place like Midas or Meinkie (or whatever its called) to get a brake job. Chances are they'll screw up your car and you'll have to pay the dealer double or triple to get it back in order.

I'm with CLK. I take my car to the dealer or to a well-respected indie shop that I have used for years. I'm a passable shade tree mechanic, and I understand how my car works, but I don't get near it with a tool more sophisticated than a tire gauge. The dollars you try to save get multiplied geometrically when you have to have damage undone. I would never use a franchise repair shop or oil change place for these cars. Ever.

Thanks for the advice guys, now I am not sure because I planned to take my car to STS Tire and Auto. Its kinda a franchise place but the work they did for some of my other cars were pretty good. Is replacing the brakes really that complicated for this car that i need to call up the stealer?

Ask the guys at STS if they REGULARLY do the brakes on Mercedes. Not "have you EVER done a brake job on Mercedes?" If you are confident they do Mercedes brakes on a regular basis and know what they are doing, go ahead. I would not let Fausak Tire (a local tire place who sells all manner of high performance tires and wheels-where I buy tires) do the brakes on my car. I use a garage that specializes in high-end cars, and specializes in MRZ.

Any jackass will tell you he can do the brakes on your car. If they screw your car up, they give you your money back, and you have to go somewhere to get the damage fixed. You have bought a car that requires special knowledge, tools, and intellegent mechanics. It's not a particularly easy car to do-it-yourself repair, and a grease monkey in a two-bay garage will wreak havoc with simple repairs.

But hey, you're a grown-up. Do what you will. Cheers.

The W220 I'm sure has brake pad wear sensors. Not to mention someone mentioned the MB rotors can not be machined so I would play it safe and use a dealer or MB specialist. Plus these cars use bolts instead of lugnuts to hold the wheel in place. Someone in a hurry could easily drive one in crooked and require you to replace the whole hub. There are 101 things that could be screwed up, even during a simple brake job.

Don't forget many of the "mechanics" staffing these franchise places are high school drop out types who only care about working their 8 hours and going home. They really don't give a dam about your car or you.

If you are in Chicago I can give the name of a very good dealer or indie shop you can use.

These cars are technician friendly.

Listen to DrJfrmLA on this.

Talk to STS tire & auto.

Sure they can do it.

Will it be right ?

Or do it yourself it is no different from any other car, just if you need rotors you have to get new ones cant turn drilled ones.

Brakes on these cars (at least my 4matic) are ridiculously simple. I had the calipers off in about 15 minutes, and the rotors off in 25.
