I was just wondering what gas mileage everybody else is getting.
I got 2000 S500 with 18" AMG rims and an average mileage for a tank of gas is 17-17.9MPG.
I tend to get 23 on the highway. I always reset the 'trip meter' when I drive for long periods on the highway. I stopped looking at city mpg so I do not have any information for you on that point.
My wife drives an 02 3.5 rl and the gas mileage is close to the same. I looked up the mileage rating of my car vs. her rl and I found a few miles difference on the EPA estimates. I cannot imagine a v6 on a smaller car getting similar mpg as a v8 on a larger car.
I'm averaging 21-22 in mixed driving. I have very little "stop and go" city driving, and my work route is on surface roads (+/-60 mph mostly, but open road). On interstates, I get (according to the car) 27-29 driving 75-85. I drive aware that I'm using $4 a gallon fuel, but I'm not a hypermiler. I had a Lexus ES that didn't average any more than that, so I'm happy. My wife's Lexus LS430 averages about 20. I think the 7-speed (from '04 on) transmission makes a noticeable difference in mileage and performance.
with my 2005 S500 4Matic I've got 21mpg today on a 200 miles mixed trip including a 45 minute stop'n'go on the interstate with 4 persons and luggage. So, I guess not too bad for real world mpg.
I never could get more than 21MPG even with AC off, but of course longest tripm maybe 30 miles, and how did you managed to get 55mph average speed, must be a long trip
Regularly getting 25 to 26mph on the highway (yesterday for example I got 26.6mph) with cruise control on and traveling at 65mph and, in the city I'm averaging about 21 to 22mph. I check the air in the tires regularly and I don't jump start at a light or zoom up to a stop. It's not a sports car.
Just out of curiousity, I did some testing yesterday. I drove 12 miles straight at 60 mph AC off and got
26.2 mpg
(at almost 100 degrees F). I guess, not even in winter, I can get far more mpg out of it, so it may be close to the max you can get out of an S500 4Matic on the long run.
For my 74K mi traveled in Texas, mostly flat land. I live 0.25 mi form freeway. I can get 23.5 to 24 per 35 mi trip. for short trip to pick up and stop with whole family of 600 lbs, it will be 17.5 mpg. initial acceleration need lots of gas. Once cruising W220 is only 5% diff than W210 V6
I have a 2000 S500. I had a B Service done on my car last week end with new MAF, Catalytic Converter etc. On my recent 600 mph trip, it has averaged 26.2 MPG to 24.5 MPG. Previously it used to give me 17.2 on motorways and less in city driving. Now giving me around 22 in city driving.
I've been watching mine consistently. '02 S430. I drive 10 hwy miles to work every day and average around 18-21mpg. Short mile mixed driving will net me about 15-18mpg. Recent 330 mile trip I took gave me interesting results. Drive up got me about 21mpg, and the drive back with an average 74mph, 25mpg. I don't think I've ever seen it higher than 26mpg in any conditions.
I've attempted to vary my driving to see how it would affect the mpg as I'm usually heavy footed and prefer quick acceleration and speed. Driving as I'm accustomed will in mixed short milage drives will get me the 18-21, when I'm more careful I can get 21-24mpg. Trying to determine now if brand of gas makes any difference.
Well - i was surprised as well as previously it did not go above 17.2 mpg. I think it is coz i have pretty much changed every thing, had new spark plugs, new air filter, new fuel filter, new Cats, New MAF and have also reset the computer readings on the transmission. My driving style is mix so average speed was around 60-80 mph.
After the service i have used only High Octane. Previously i was using regular so could be due to that reason as well. Considering mine is a S500, your should be in the region of 28-30 mpg?
Oh yes, there is difference in British and American MPG as well. Not sure which one is higher? If British is less, then you should be Ok, i would imagine.
Thought I would add my recent mileage numbers. I just did a 750 mile round trip at mostly freeway speeds of 80 mph and returned 23.5 mpg. I have a 2000 S430/W220 with 95K and a recent B service performed. I did upgrade to the pair of K&N air filters and a new set of plugs recently, but I have not noticed a huge difference in mileage. Still love this car!
wow looks like you guys are getting good mileage, with my short trips all the time average is 17mpg never more than that
but o well gas is cheap now so it is not bad
