Is that so. Strange! I hope Frank or one of the other more knowledgeable guys is watching because I think you will find many cases on E class forum where they have fixed rust problems free on much older cars.

Where are the bits of rust. Can you add comment to each photo or is that too difficult? The car itself looks in fabulous nick. A credit to you

Update

Just to give you guys an update...Im here in the states...Went into the dealership the other day...Looked at the new S550...very nice car...I told them that I wanted to get one of those, but keep my car and give it to my fiancee...I told them about my rust problem and, of course, they had never heard about it.....the two salesman even smirked and said, "Mercedes quality is legendary...They do not rust." I went into the service department and they said they were well aware of the rust problem, however, I was out of luck...The service guy said that he had a lady come in just the other day with the same problem...she was a good customer...etc...but they also told her that she was out of luck...I told him about this forum (and the numerous posts about this issue) and he said that he could find a similar forum for all cars!!! He said, "well, I have a 1995 pathfinder and I know that all 95 pathfinders develop rust around the door frame." I was stunned!!!!! I replied, well, my car is 5 years newer than yours and cost 60k more....should a flagship, top of the line luxury car rust in 5 years???? He had no response...While I did tell him that I would not purchase a new S550 if Mercedes would not fix my S500, he said that people switch all the time...from mercedes to bmw to lexus...etc.....However, he assured me that the new S550 was a new standard of excellence for Mercedes!!! (I was in shock when walking out of the dealership!!) They did not understand why I would not want to purchase a new Mercedes if they would not stand behind my old one with 66k miles....What should I do??? Any suggestions???
Thanks!

I would definitely get back on to Mercedes Customer service. Could e-mail them all you have just said about what happened at your dealer. Lousy, stupid dealer losing himself sales. Any other proper Mercedes Dealers near you??? Keep pushing. When you contact Customer Service if the first e-mail response is no good, reply at once saying not satisfied and want it passed to supervisor. Often helps. Some say third complaint leads to action. Hope so. Good luck and keep us posted.

Well done. Keep calm. Remember that Customer Service are not to blame. Get them on your side if you can. Say things like "don't you think it's wrong for this to happen on a car costing $90k (or whatever it is new), wrong to happen to a Mercedes. Can't you get someone to help put this right under 'goodwill' or at least get the dealer to give me a good price against a new one" (If that is what you want). Merc do sometimes help the dealer to give a good deal under 'goodwill'.

Normally the dealer makes the case to Mercedes for you. Yours sounds pretty useless but as a second string you could try to talk to the Sales Director or another Director of the dealership and say you are not happy with the way you have been treated or with the car. What can he do to help? Get as high up as you can.
