Okay, so I have a 2003 S400 4MATIC, with 42,xxx miles on it. Last week I took it to an independent shop to get the rear brake pads changed (the Brake wear light had come on and the dealership wanted too much $$). After having the pads changed (OEM Pads according to the shop), the Brake Wear light went away and there were "0 Malfunctions" for two days. On the third day, I go to start the car and all of a sudden I have 5 Malfunctions,
ESP
ABS
Airmatic Suspension
BAS
Pre-Safe Not Operational
Does anybody know what could be the cause of this? I tried this method:
start car
turn wheel all the way to the left
turn wheel all the way to the right
turn back to center
wait 30 sec
turn off
restart
all the malfunctions were still present. The red "BRAKE" indicator is constant on the dash now as if I had the e-brake engaged.
Heard of this twice before, turned out to be a loose or broken connector. Could also be a severed wire. Sounds electrical to me, since it showed up after the service. Take the car back to the shop.

took it back to the shop. They checked out everything and said that there was nothing wrong on their behalf. They said to take it to the dealership and just have them clear the errors/fault codes, because everything is in tact. The shop didn't have a STAR diagnostics machine to clear the codes with.
I dropped it off today. Tomorrow we'll find out what happpens....im kinda worried.
in the meantime, i got a neat little toy rental :)

What do you think of your rental?
My MB dealership knows that I dont want a C Class because I like to drive FAST! So they always give me an ML500 now :)

my dealership called me this morning and told me that rodents apparently gained access to my engine bay, and have chewed away at some wiring, which was causing the errors. They want to charge me $1100 to replace all of it! They said it's not covered under warranty, although I think it should be. My car only has 42,xxx miles on it (2003 model), and I believe it's a manufacturer defect if animals can gain access to the engine, it's not my fault. grrrrr....thoughts, please!!
It's out of warranty, no different than if a rock hit your windshield while driving. This is covered by your auto insurance under comprehensive. Let the insurance pick up the bill, you pay deductable which is probably chump change.
i still think it's a bit ridiculous that mercedes craftsmanship allows rodent access to their engines....especially on the $100,000.00 vehicles. Honestly, that's never happened to me with any other car, and I haven't moved in 15 years, so it's not like i'm in a new area or anything with a rodent problem.
it's a mercedes craftsmanship fault IMO. but i guess the dealership feels differently. if i'm driving and a rock hits my windshield, i think that's technically 'avoidable'. This is not avoidable, especially since I live so close to the dealership. What if rodents chewed through wiring of all the cars at the dealership, who would pay for that??
I feel for you, I have had the same thig happen in the past. Only difference was that it was in a Cessna 340a, nose electroics. At the time it cost 11k to fix. Oh ... insurance didn't cover it.
Maybe it's time to go mushroom cloud effective on the rodents.
