| RE: 03 w220 The short answer is no, but please read on.
Airmatic problems can occur in any model year using it. Any pneumatic system can develop leaks. My '00 developed cracks in the upper strut mounts - I replaced them (about $550) - and they were replaced with mounts of a different design. Had they failed, my car would have gone completely down - but I caught the problem before it could.
I also replaced the airmatic relay (inexpensive and simple) - the relay can stick. If it sticks off, your car will gradually lose ride height. If it goes all the way down while you're driving, it could cause damage to the wheel wells and fenders (as you steer). That's expensive If it sticks on, you may burn out the airmatic pump - that's expensive. If you encounter those problems, get it in for service!
I don't know what other redesigns have been done from the earlier years to the later ones, but the redesigned strut mounts show that effforts have been made to improve the system.
The system, like any other, is subject to wear - especially seals throughout. The higher the mileage, and the harder the car is driven, the sooner parts will fail. If you buy a later model car with lower mileage, you'll probabl be able to drive further before the inevitable occurs - unless you buy one where it has already occurred, and has been fixed properly.
I wouldn't let airmatic scare you. Two of my wife's Lincoln Town Cars have had their rear ride leveling springs (air shocks) replaced - $3K each time. It happens.
The long answer: Buy an extended warranty, or budget for it and enjoy your ride! There is nothing like a Benz, and airmatic increases the pleasure of the driving experience.
