We have a 1999 mercedes s-class s320 with the airmatic suspension system.
Of late the pump has started to make a significant noise when recharging the air in the suspension. This happens both when stationery and when moving and usually lasts up to a couple of minutes.
Recently the time this noise has lasted for has increased and as a result we are concerned that either the pump is deteriorating.
We have an aftermarket warranty on the vehicle and, not surprisingly, the garage is not able to find a fault.
If anyone can help, or provide advice, it would be really appreciated. If I have not provided enough information, please let me know.
That is what I figured - a new compressor. We have already spoken to a mercedes service centre and the cost will be approx. £400 inc. VAT and fitting. Given the number of failures, or issues, Merecedes has had with these, you would have thought they would issue a recall or part-pay as a goodwill gesture. Has anyone had any experience / knowledge of:
- goodwill contributions
- getting such work completed by Mercedes on warranty terms
- recalls on this model and year of car
This forum has been a great sounding board and help so far. Thanks.
Ya it's a pretty common thing. The compressors start to make noise and eventually that's all that they do in the end. Make noise but no air output. It's pretty common on airmatic right up to the new models.
Mine did the same and the compressor died. Then the car went straight to the ground. A new compressor for $425 solved the problem. Apparently, a relay sticks killing the compressor. I've heard that replacing the relay every year or two is cheap insurance.
