I saw on the freeway today a elderly lady about in her late 60s or early 70s driving a black s55, nothing is wrong with that but she had to be going 40MPH in a 65MPH zone. Now just because someone has the money for such a vehicle does that mean they should be driving it?[:D]
Hmm I am not sure if you missed the point... i think what the original poster was going for was why do these older people buy cars that are primarily meant for HIGH PERFORMANCE driving. I dont think any of us would say anything bout seeing an 80 yo woman/man in a rolls royce phantom or Bentley Arnage - Its the idea that they went to the dealership and requested to buy an S55AMG....... even instead of an S500 or S600 (yes i know performance is there in the S600)
Not sure if you are referring to me, or the original poster who is pissed off....... I certainly am not - If this is all it took to piss me off....yikes.
No I didn't miss the point...I just see it differently than you...It boils down to the fact it is none of our business what anybody owns..Example would you begrudge a guy in a wheel chair owning an S55 or S65 if all he could do was sit in the passengers seat and enjoy the ride??? Old or not I love the fact an older woman was driving a s55 It's even more hilarious how it pisses some people off..
These sorts of sightings usually just make me feel sad for the car, which will never be used to it's potential, and also for the potential owners, who have had yet another of a limited production of cars snatched away by someone so clueless. But, it is their money, and they are free to do with it whatever they please...

Just because you saw her doing 40 in a 65 zone then doesn't mean she's always in the granny lane all the time, I know old people who drive super slow in town, but once they get on the open highway, they're a totally different driver.

Well, frankly, I think too much is made of the elderly in this discussion. I've seen as many young people driving like hypnotized zombies in traffic -- yes, especially on freeways -- in AMG's. I wonder if they understand there is prestige to be had in owning one without actually appreciating why there is prestige in owning one. [;)]

Of course they don't understand, most have it because it's bling, they have no IDEA of the capabilities, engineering, and road worthiness of the system. All they see is the "AMG" badge on the rear and the star on front. Same w most Beemer owners... "M" on the rear and the prop on the front.
Like to see em just ONCE on the Nurburgring at speed... Probably crap their lemming drawers...
