My dealer said to look in a Mercedes enthusiast magazine published in europe and there is an update that allows dvd video as in europen models. I have not been able to located the ad for the update. It should be a firmware update. No help from the dealers here. I guess enabling it would be like removing a catlytic converter.
The hardware is the same but the software is not. People have played with changing the settings through star-diagnostic but to no avail. The firmware needs to be patched and nobody has figured out how to do it yet. The european equipment that removes the block will not work on the US head unit. It would be nice if someone came up with the necessary patch, but until they do your only alternative is to spring big bucks on a european head unit which is not without trade-offs.

I heard all you need is a shop with Star Diagnostics which any MB shop should have. They can "unlock" the viewing feature on the DVD so you can wiew it.

Ok...
I used my amateur skills to re-install my Command 2.5 with the programming and modifications made by www.TVandNav2Go.com. Bottom line is that everything works as advertised.
The new audio jacks allow me to play single CDs and MP3s via my DVD player as well. Another bonus is that the 'black box' accepts a video2 input for a backup camera. Video2 kicks in automaticaly when the reverse lights come on. I don't have the backup camera (yet?).
Dominic and his staff at TVandNav2Go were willing and able to answer all of my followup, install related questions by phone too.
