My 2000 S500 (manufactured November 1999) has the easy-entry rotating switch at the end of the steering column adjustment lever. When selected with the rotary switch, the easy-entry feature is supposed to tilt the steering wheel upward when the driver's door is opened, and lower it back into place when the key is inserted into the ignition.
My owner's manual discusses the easy-entry feature as if it is installed; it has no disclaimers, such as "when installed," or any identification of the feature as an option.
Yet, the feature does not work on my car. The dealer states that it is an option on model year 2000 cars, and it became standard in MY 2001 and later. It seems very odd that Mercedes would install a steering wheel stalk with the rotary switch for the feature, and discuss it in the owner's manual in the way described, without the feature being present.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it perhaps a simple add-on module?
My 2000 S500 has it and it works... as far as I know it's standard on that car.
Having said that I don't use it because I prefer a low steering wheel and the easy entry/exit moves so slowly that it's more of a hassle to have it on than off.
A visit to the dealer today resolved the problem, despite assurances on six visits (including today, again) that it was an option not installed in my car. However, it took discussion with a savvy tech rather than the service desk to resolve it.
The easy-entry/exit feature is installed on my car; it only needed "normalization" (running the steering wheel full up, then full down) to set the travel limits for the Hall's effect generator that controls steering column position. With that done, the feature functions. [:)]
The tech also indicates this is something that should be done if problems are encountered with power seat adjustments as well.
Great for the tech. [:p] Bad on the service desk (and sales staff) for a year and a half of excuses rather than action. [xx(]
