How will the ride characteristics change on a 2001 S600 if I change from the stock alloy wheels configuration of
7 1/2 J x 17 H2 alloys with 225/55 17 97H tires all around to the AMG Monoblock Alloy Package of
8 1/2J X 18 H2 monoblocks with 245/45/18 tires in the front and
9 1/2J X 18 H2 monoblocks with 275/40/18 tires in the back. The sport tires would be Michelin Pilot all seasons.
Besides the better handling will I still get the plush, soft Mercedes ride or will it turn into a BMW ride.
two ways you can go with this, either do some reaserch on tires such as continentals vs michelins or bridgestones or try to keep the same profile tire example. 245/55/18 if their made instead of 245/50/18 good luck
good thinking with going with the larger rubber! That makes sense to me, if the sidewall is the same thickness, the plushnes should hardly be affected right?
Hi,
I have switched over to the 5 spoke 18" alloys with a sidewall measurement of 45. Although the appearance looks fantastic with a more sporty look, the ride quality deteriorates drastically. The whole car becomes more bumpy and if you do kickdown the car worryingly wanders left, right, ... due to the road surface being tram lined!
Not only that, the recommended tyre pressures for the 18" tyres is dubious to say the least. Every wheel depot gives you a different psi reading including MB dealers.
I tried to search for wheels in 18" which have a higher sidewall measurement, but here in the UK the largest size is 40 for 18" MB alloys.
So, if you can find tyres with a similar sidewall to the original 17" then go for it!
