Just picked up an CLS55. Wow what a great car. Want to lower it but cant decide links or mod. The mod seems like a lot of money and cuttting and splicing wires makes me nervous. But it looks like most guys are going with the mod. Any input would be great.
I used the lowering links I picked up on ebay for a decent price. Had them installed for $100, kept the original parts as the change is not permanent nor is there any drilling or sawing on your car. Perfect!

Once again!
If you "mechanically" lower your CLS you may have a stability problem at higher speeds - the automatic/computerized system "automatically" lowers the CLS (all models) at higher speeds. I would not do it with washers and spacers (the KMart fix). My CLS 63 AMG needs no lowering - the system is pre-set (neither does the 55). However, I bought my daughter a CLS 500. She wanted it as low as "Dad's car" - I took it to my mechanic. He put it on his computer and lowered it by re-programming the system. This allows the computer to function properly at higher speeds when the car lowers automatically at higher speeds. The dealer should be able to to this - but good luck talking them into it (warranty issues). Just find a GOOD tech at a private MB shop who knows his stuff. OR, buy the Renntech digital lowering module (very reliable). Mechanically lowering a computerized system just does not make any sense.
Had absolutly no issues at top speed (the first and probibily last time I will feel the need to go that fast). Stuck to the road like glue...as it was already lower for high speed. Your explaination is very credible and makes perfect sence. My stealer would not work the computer magic due to liability issues and I have no tech wizards in my town unfortunatly or I would have done what you did.

I'm interested in doing this to my SL55 AMG, but don't quite understand the above sentence. If the car is actually lowered by the re-programming, do you mean that at higher speed it lowers even more? How much lower (in inches) is the car as a result of the re-programming and how much lower than this would it go "at speed"? Don't want it dragging on the asphalt at 150MPH.
