I think Mercedes has changed their marketing plan a few years ago and now they have a more focused targeting group in the US. In other countries they are offering smaller engines like the S350 and the CLS 350, so they have them but just not here. They want to make the CLS more exclusive whereas the E class is for the mass. So, no V6 for the CLS. Just my $.02.

Yea, hopefully with the price of premium gas hitting $5.00/gallon in the US this year, they will align engine offerings with Europe.

Personnaly I'd like to see the CLS offered in the US with the 320CDI like in Europe... I understand they want to keep these somewhat exclusive, but I think that would still be the case due to the price point that these cars sit at and the body style being more "coupe-ish" than traditional Sedans... I've not heard anything about the possibility of a CLS350 and think there are alot of other engine/class options they'd consider first... Also, I think a CLS350 would feel underpowered due to the weight of the CLS...

3.5L should be plenty of horsepower in the 4000 pound CLS, especially the new 300hp 3.5 in the SLK. Keep in mind the 3.5L is used in the 4700+ pound ML and Car and Driver magazine test showed a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds, top speed of 130mph. The CLS350 is already available in Europe.
