No doubt you've got a hard decision to make especially since you have the $$$ to afford the AMG.
Couple of things to consider, will the AMG be easier or more difficult to sell or trade-in when the time comes and do you have a place to drive the AMG car to take advantage of the performance difference?
When I decided back in August I chose the 550 for the reasons above...

I'd like to thank everyone for his comments and help. I've made my decision.
In fact, this afternoon I bought a 2008 CLS63 in obsidian black with back nappa leather interior, matt burl walnut trim, P2 package, Distronic, Parktronic. I can' say that I'm thrilled about the Distronic, but they had the car there.
I've been struggling with this for the last few days, so this afternoon I went down to the dealer with my wife. We drove both the 550 and the 63. The 550 is certainly a lot of car and has plenty of power, but both my wife and I were finally won over by the wonderful exhaust note of the 63.
If I was being practical, I would have gotten the 550. But my wife and I agreed that it would be appropriate not to be practical.
So the die is cast.

Will do. It'll be a few days before we can take delivery. We closed the deal and completed the paper work last night at about 6:00, and the detail guys who prepare new cars for customer pick-up were off work and have time off over the Holiday.
Picked it up this afternoon. The weather's beastly this weekend, so I drove it straight home sedately. I'm actually grateful for the bad weather, the owner's manual is the size of a telephone book. I need to stay indoor and try to learn how to make everything work right.
