Greetings... Just like the title says, interested in both cars, but dont know where ill end up. Im in my low 30's at 32, and find both really attractive to me. The e has been around some time now since 03, but the body seems to still look fresh to me enough to want to drive one 2-3 years. Im considering 05's and newer, preferably a starmarked used unit from a private sale. On the other hand, the cls is more sleek in appearance to me,but dont know if the cars "too old" for me?.
The cls 55's seem to have many more private parties trying to sell them than e55's?. just observed this via auto trader over the last week. Could anyone chime in on thoughts on either cars. Im currently in Minnesota and probably wouldn't drive either in the snow. The cars ive looked at are priced from 50k to 70k between the 2 models. Thanks, BC

this is a great topic, my wife and i have both E55 and CLS55. my wife took over my E55 when i purchase the CLS55.
E55 is more common on the street, however because the E-class had some minor changes on the 07, and also changed to E63, so you will be owning a older model. and depending on your opinion regarding the new front bumper, and minor changes to the rear, if you are okay with a older model car, than E55 is perfect, larger back seat, more comfortable interior settings, a perfect machine that can keep up with most car. (i think you will regret the E55 since there's a newer version of the E-class, you wont feel like is a new car !!!)
CLS 55 is more rare, and not as common, you typically run across CLS 500 or CLS 550, and almost never see a CLS 55 or 63. the body is the same with the newer models, however there are less back seat room compare to the E-class, and only for 2 passenger in the back due to the rear center consol. In my personal opinion, the cls have a very sleek body lines, and looks agressive even standing still, but the windowns are small so visibility are limited.and it feels much larger than the E-class. however people seem to appreciate the CLS more that the E-class, and i actually feels more younger in the CLS than the E class.... and i feel like the CLS is perfect without any upgrades needed. i.e. rims.
i am in my late twenties. 29 to be exact. and i dont find the CLS 55 being an old person car, i like to be different, if the price is right, get the CLS 55... get your straight pipe done, thats all you need..
in terms of power, they are both the same. just step on the gas and go !!!!

Thx newguy and Glen for your thoughts. Im totally comfortable with the looks of CLS, now ill drive one. The interiors seem a hair more plush or refined on the CLS,no?. I dont notice much difference on the e class between the 06/7's to justify spending the extra $. I just dont want to regret it like 3 months after the purchase as it will cost if i want to chuck it right away. Any other ideas guys?. thanks, BC
P.s. I always liked the Tectite Grey e55 color. Does CLS/mercedes still handle this color??.
The grey im referring to is like that of Porsches "seal grey", which is a dark grey.

i find the CLS to be more of a younger car too. but is a different impression than the E-Class. just feels more "wow" than the typical E. my neighborhood is full of E-class, but thats typical in most average community here in LA. and in Paris, E-class are Taxi out there...
i notice a big different between the 06 and the 07 E-class. the 07 have a more agressive front bumper, minor changes in headlights, the rear trunk has a more clean crome piece that gives a more agressive look from the back.
i have always been the type to switch in and out of cars every 6 to 12 months as i get bored of the car, however i can honestly say that this CLS55 will be in my garage for a few years. i've owned my share of great cars, however i have never been so impress before by the CLS 55.
depending on your preferences, i am keeping stock 19" AMG wheels, and light tint, i am ordering the power kit which include pulley and ECU upgrade, hopefully bring the car to 550+ hps.
make sure you order the dynamic seats and keyless go. you can find a good pre-owned CLS55 with less than 20,000 miles for around 70K.
i think the CLS now is what the E use to be back in 2005.
I don't think Tectite Grey is available anymore in the States. Personally, I find the CLS a younger persons car than the E.
Hmm, what part of MN are you from? I saw more R107s in a day when I was there than I've ever seen in my life.
Hello AsianML...Ive seen your name all over BW over the last few years. Thanks for your reply. Im from St.Paul, our capitol city, living in the river valley/St Croix area. Yes, 107's are somewhat popular here....matter of fact, theres one in my guest parking area right now! (my 79 450sl)
Thanks Newguy for your weigh in again. The CLS is extremely sleek and everytime i see an E here in Mn, its usually like a 320/350, or a 500 at best. folks around here are quite conservative with their wallets. (we are like 3rd or 4th highest taxed state in the union). Im agreeing with you on the 70k number, seems to be true. I just seem to see more cls's trying to be sold by private owners though versus the e class.
Hi BC - thoughts from across the pond. I'm 31 and i've just bought a CLS. Over here and all over Europe E-classes are used as taxis (as someone said above - but it's not just in Paris!) - primarily as they go on for hundreds of thousand miles so they do have that rep.
When i first drove one i was pleasantly surprised at the feedback i got from the car. Being quite a big car i was expecting it to be detached from the driving experience (like the Jaguar I had before and hated!) but it wasn't. It's great you'll love it.
