wood steering wheel with CLS63 paddles installed

After reading Kevin M's post I decided to give it a shot and do the same. It took me 3 hours and 5 broken drill bits.....but I got it done!

The installation was a little different than Kevin's, I didn't have to cut and glue my old paddles. The whole on the wheel for the paddles was actually too small for the 63 paddles, so I had to Dremel the sides to get it to fit. Other than that all the other steps were the same as Kevin's post.

Thanks again Kevin for all the help!

Did you just install that gorgeous steering wheel on a 500? Your reference to the old paddles, I guess that is where I’m confused. Do you have an AMG car? I love that steering wheel; I guess Kevin has the same one as well. Please let me know whether that same wheel can be fitted to a 550. Thanks. Looks Great!

Thanks, It was quite an effort...but definitely worth it.

Here are the tools and parts you need:

Wheel $1000 - $1400 depending on where you get it.
AMG 63 paddles $108 + tax Part #171 267 00 46
T30 Torx head
10mm Hex
Bit extender (the shaft in the wheel for the airbag screw is about 3" long)
Socket wrench
Dremel tool to do cutting and drilling

Check out Kevin's post, it's excellent, detailed step by step how to.

The wheel is made by MP Design and I installed it on my 500, but since I got the AMG package it came with the wheel that had the paddles. The wood wheel will fit on a 550, all you need to do is order the 63 paddles.

You can get the wheel from the site below, it's $1350 and well worth it.
Mercedes Parts and Accessories – Wheels, Floor Mats, Car Covers and Exhausts – from Performance Products

If you price it at the dealership, it's about $1700 for the classic style.

Good luck.

They plug into the wheel the same way the old shifters do. They work perfectly....much better than the old plastic shifters.

not very complicated.....just a lot of tedious work. The hardest part was drilling through the wheel to screw in the paddles.

In your situation it might be a little different since you're just installing the paddles.

Let me know when you get the paddles and I'll drop by and give you a hand.
