Daimler got a waiver from the Secretariat of the United Nations Special Committee on Internal Combustion Automobile Naming Conventions. It's only a 3 year waiver so next year the issue will be discussed in a special meeting of the Committee and then, if approved by the Committee, go to the full Assembly for a vote that will require a majority of the full 192 members to approve it else Daimler will be required to revert to the "sedan" distinction or risk economic and possible military sanctions.

Wow,
I didn't know it was that complicated.
Sanctions might mean higher prices at the service desk. Hope they get the waiver.

Another implication is that MB may well have fallen foul of the European Sales Discription Act of 1998, as a result of which they will be forced to give full refunds representing the original purchase price of every CLS, minus VAT, IVA or sales tax.

Amen and hello BMW, Lexus

Heck, if they're forced to give a full refund to those who've purchased, then don't you mean Amen MB! I mean, free car, right?
As for the coupe question, the car is without doubt targeted at one or at most two people. Yes you can cram two more in the back at need, but they definitely are just there at your convenience. If you squint right, and think of that selfish design characteristic as the principal component of a "coupe", then they're spot on.
If you get hung up in numbers of things (doors, gross weight, etc), then this might not be so obvious....
whatever the reason, I am quite sure that BMW is kicking themselves in the ass for not thinking of it first. I didn't even consider a 6 Series because the back seat is unusable, and apparently I am not alone in that observation with CLS'es outnumbering 6 series by about 3:1 in my neck of the woods. BMW does get points having the convertible, that is something I would like to see MB offer as well.
