CLS: Connecting my bluetooth cell phone to MBZ system - how?

Got a 2006 CLS500. Got the phone system installed, but the MBZ dealer said I had to activate it myself (!). Called Verizon. Verizon said, put the car into pairing mode, so your phone can see the car. How do I make the car see my cell phone? What is "pairing mode"? Why the hell didn't the dealer do this for me?

Are you in the US? If so, did your MB dealer explicitly tell you your car is Bluetooth capable?
I recently bought a 2006 CLS500 in the US and Bluetooth is not supported, either standard or as a factory option.
