Time for me to get rear tires on my 2001 cl500 sport. oem size is 275/40 18 . can i get 285/35 18 ??? it will give bigger footprint and lower sidewall look, but my concern is will it affect the abc suspension in anyway. i don't want to mess up the expensive suspension just for better looks.
As always, thank you for reading and any input/advice is much appreciated.

On my 2003 CL500 with the "sport" option the front tires are 245/45x18 and the rear tires are 275/40x18. The overall diameters are 26.7" and 26.5" respectively. The overall diameter of a 285/35x18 is around 24.7". So, the revolutions per mile would be different if the 285/35x18 tires were installed in the rear. If your 2001 CL500 has "ESP"(electronic stability control) and "ASR"(automatic slip control) then you could have some issues.
I concur with reddog's post above. I have a 2002 CL500 sport, with AMG 18s, with tire sizes at 245/45zr18 and 275/40zr18. Note this is the OEM option, so it won't result in any problems related to ABC.
I haven't heard of any ABC problems resulting from putting larger wheels (19s or 20s) on the car. However, the specific tire size you mention (283/35x18) I am not familiar with...
I had the same questions with my 2000 CL500 when I changed wheels 4 years ago. I went with 20 inch wheels, 9 inch wide in front and 10 inch in the back. I mounted Toyo Proxes T1R's in 285/30-20 in the rear and 245/35-20 in the front. Both measure 26.8 inches in diameter. I must warn you that you will get a slightly harsher ride, but with much inproved traction, grip, and handling. Although the car has been lowered with the Brabus ABC lowering kit, it does not rub at all. I was told that this is about the largest one can go with rubber. Hope this helps.
