I have a 2006 CL65. Everyone that knows about it, knows that it is a monster. I would like to get the 155 MPH restriction taken off. All this power (and extra money) for what? So it can sound louder and reach 60 before a CL500, but in the end can only do the same speed as a 500? What type of place should I go to, to get the limiter taken off? Do Mercedes-Benz service centers do that?
Because I'm going to need it to go as fast as it can.
Has anyone else got their limiter taken off? If so, were there any problems etc... And what is the general cost?
He's right - RENNTech and Brabus (I didn't know that Kleeman did it) are probably the few that have bothered figuring out those infernal ECUs. Here's the problem and it's twofold: a- the ECU is hard-fixed into that board, which is inside the black box, so messing with it means you have to access it via the CANbus, b- it's not documented. If you have the software to access ECUs (it's out there and apparently goes via the OBD connector or some kind of proprietary connection somewhere, I don't know) you can see how the ECU behaves under various conditions. It turns out that these big shops spend a lot of time and money to just figure out and reverse engineer where the various limiters are (yep, there are usually several as I am told) and then engineer code to get around them. The most reliable way to get around them is to do a chip.
Now, when you do this, you'll also get more HP (like you need it). I have heard some stories that the transmission in these cars really isn't designed to take much more power and abuse than it does in a CL65. That may lead to a situation like what happened with the Olds 442 back in the day: dropping the transmission when you stomp on the gas. Er, at least the potential for some transmission issues down the road.
