customize and warranty

I have the certified pre-owned warranty on my 2002 cl500. I put 20 inch chrome wheels on the car about 3 weeks ago and my friend said that by doing that, I have voided my warranty. If the ABC goes bad, Benz wont fix it under warranty because I put custom wheels on the car.

for the people who have put wheels or done any other mods under benz warranty, have you had a problem at the dealer when your car broke or needed something replaced under warranty?

Thanks

upgraded wheels will not effect your warranty unless the tech with the aid of shop foreman or service manager can determine that the wheels were the cause of the failure. i have yet to see any issues though. besides cars from the factory come with upgraded wheel and tire packages.

Personally, I would not make any customized changes to a car under warranty. It is just not worth the risk of MB saying "it ain't covered because you have made changes to the car", and in their opinion, that is what caused the problem in question. It wasn't too many years ago that car manufacturers were declining engine damage problems because factory filters were not being used. Of course they were taken to court over this and the verdict was they couldn't deny claims because of after market filters. Just my 2 cents.

That's what I was thinking also. Benz sells factory 20 inch wheel packages. But I was scared that the dealers excuse would be that the factory wheels "meet the exact specs that belong on the car" and that aftermarket wheels do not. (I.E certain weight of wheel, etc) As long as my control arms, bushings, or any part of the suspension doesnt go bad, I think I should be good. I seriously doubt they blame my wheels for electrical issues or something under the hood....lol If they do, I'll just call my attorney

For now everything is good. There is a bit of ride difference but I expected that. The car is definitely a little heavier now because of the weight of the wheels. My plan is to keep them for another 3-4 months and then take them off for the winter and sell them.

The following is just my own experience. As Jud mentioned it's always better to err on the safe side by removing aftermarket items when you take your car in for a service.

As for me, I have taken my car to three different dealers for service under Starmark warranty here in Southern California. Each time I would always show up with my 20' rim, aftermarket quad outlet exhaust, etc. and after N visits, no one had given me any issues.
