Along with the three dealer owned Cl 500 I have been looking at, I also have an auctioneer looking for me. I was referred to this individual by a mutual friend who has a CLS550 and CL55. Would it be better to get the car from a dealer or this gentleman? I found a great warranty by 'carchex.' It covers everything for 3 years and 100,000 miles, from the meticulous electric and computer system to engine. But the price is 4,500 and I have been advised by the auctioneer not to pay that much for the warranty. His rebuttal is if you buy a good car, you don't need to pay that much, I agree, but with all the electronic systems on this car isn't intelligent to prepare for the worst and hope for the best? Has anyone got any advice and what do we know about this warranty?

Just read this forum and you will get an idea of the costly repairs that come with these cars. $4500 sounds about right. If a third party quotes you any less, then there is something wrong. A good warranty on these cars shouldnt run less then $3k. If it does, then there any definitely things they wont cover when it comes down to it. Ive said this once and I'll say it again, the warranty you get is more important then the actual car itself..IMO
I dont think it matters who you get the car from. Just have it inspected. Are you purchasing it from a Benz dealer or some other shop? If its benz, you can atleast purchase a warranty through them which is what I recommend. Me personally, I didnt want this car without a factory benz warranty. No third party for me. Last thing I need is for my car to break down (ABC system) and then get quoted $4k only to have the third party tell me its not covered or they will only pay for 50% or something.
If you get it from the gentlemen, and you really really like the car, spend $150 and get it inspected by Benz.
Dont forget to run the VIN at the dealer to see what type of work has been done on the car
Thanks for the advice on the VIN numbers, along with a carfax check, all past problems will come to light. The factory warranty I have not inquired about, but will this weekend.I agree, the warranty, no matter the price, is a great idea. My next step is negotiating price. The auctioneer said to stay away from the black cars because the color tends to fade. I also plan on getting the car inspected by benz.
