I have been looking at a multitude of CL 500 via Auto Trader. In my search, I found 3 cars that seem, at face value, to be a "good buy."
1. 2000- $23,999 with 66K
2. 2001- $23,988 with 47K
3. 2000 - $23,995 with 59K
All of these cars are from dealers throughout the Florida area. Doing my homework, as well as perusing this site and others, found the various meticulous electrical problems and the major expenses, ie ABC pump. I plan on finding the best possible warranties and extended warranties. Any ideas on where to look, cost, and further problems incurred with the purchase of a 7/8 year old automobile. I will be asking the dealers themselves the same questions but if there is something better, I would like to take advantage of it and pad these expenses with the "maximum" warranty possible.
I just bought my CL last week and its a 2002. I didnt want to spend more then 30k for a car but at the same time after doing my homework on this car, there was no way I was going to buy it without a FACTORY Benz warranty.
Mine was a certified pre-owned and came with a 1 year Benz warranty. Thats all I plan on keeping the car for so that was suffucient for me. I could have extended for another 2 years but decided not to.
If I were you, Id spend more time researching warranty for this car then the actual car itself. You can try warranty direct. Id get something close to the factory warranty benz has. Its going to be expensive. You might have to spend $3000-$4000 for a warranty but well worth it. If you call around and they tell you anything less then that like $1500 or $2000, run! There are many systems on this car that 3rd party companies wont cover. You need to find out what those things are. Id start with the ABC
to sum it up, do not buy this car without a GREAT warranty.

These cars do have issues, mostly electronic in nature and then the ABC system where usually the pump fails. I would try to get the latest model you can afford and get a good warranty. I have a '02 CL500 that I am considering selling. It is pretty much like new with less than 30K miles on it. It's silver with black interior. It is covered by Mercedes Starmark warranty until October, 2009. I mention this as I see you are looking at Florida cars. If you would like to know more, just email or PM me. Good luck what ever you decide. Jud
