Carmax has two CL's in stock.... (both 2002) One is black with 62,000 miles going for $27,698 and the other is silver with 51,000 miles going for $27,098.
I do not want to purchase this car from anywhere else since I know those mom and pop shops go to dealer auctions, purchase the car and just put it on the lot for sale without ever checking out the car. Carmax does a nice bumper to bumper inspection and runs tests on mostly the entire system. I know I will have a piece of mind purchasing from Carmax knowing the car has been checked out. They are a little expensive and i can probably get this car for around 24-25k but will have no idea of what its been through.
Anyway, if I do decide to purchase one of these cars, how do you guys feel about the price? And do you think the Carmax extended warranty will cover most of the components? From what I saw, its decent. they stated the suspension, power steering pump etc is all covered.
2002 CL500's are not considered reliable cars. 2003 and newer had some refinements making them more reliable but far from trouble free. The waranty will help but you may see the shop more than you may like. Maybe wait till they get a newer one?
If you must have one of them NOW I highly recommend the BLK one .

Run screaming. You need an exclusive warranty which specifies only the few items NOT covered. Way too many proprietary items on CL's such as the ABC system which aren't covered in inclusionary warranties. These cars can sink you if you're not wealthy. Keep reading this forum to learn more.
I think it is not so important what you pay for one of these cars as it is the quality of the warranty you get. While it's always nice to get a great deal, someone could give you a CL and if you have a lot of trouble with it and have just a so so warranty, you could be out some serious $.

Sounds like purchasing this car with the FACTORY warranty still in place is the way to go. My friend leased his a few years ago and he said he didnt have any troubles with it. The windows stopped going up and down and maybe few electrical issues here and there but never anything major.
I dont know, Ive been spending the last few months researching this vehicle and i really want it bad. I want a good warranty to go with it. I guess I will have to dig deeper and actually ask questions and get more details as to what is covered by carmax's warranty other then the usual stuff listed in the brochure. I have to ask about the ABC hoses, pump, air suspension etc.
I plan on getting a black one. Ive looked around for a 03 and found a few good deals but again, I dont trust local dealers. If its not pre-owned certified by the dealer, the car was never checked out. Most put it right on the lot after a trade in or purchase from a dealer auction.
I think it is actually better to buy a MB from your "Stealer" since you can purchase an extended warranty from them which is much better than any other on the market. This is the only way you can purchase a MB extended warranty unless you buy the car from a private party which already has it. If you shop around, including Ebay where many Stealers list their cars, you can sometimes get a pretty good deal. That is how I bought my '02 by dealing directly with the Ebay dept. of the stealer. I estimated I saved around $5k by doing it this way as opposed to purchasing like cars from other stealers not listed on Ebay.
It's a good question, and I hate dealer rip-offs but I agree the Starmark is the best extended warranty. I think you can only get it on 2005 or newer now? Someone correct me if I am wrong. But yes, buy one with factory warranty still in effect and then get an extended warranty. WarrantyDirect looks good to me btw. But you pay $3-4K for any of them. Given that a single repair to one of the CL's complex systems can exceed that sum, it's money well spent.

MB still has their extended warranty but I don't believe it's called Starmark any more.
Well I have found a few certified pre-owned CL's from Benz dealers but they are well above the market/blue book price. Once they CPO the car, they jack the price up like 5k. With a CPO, they give you a full 1 year warranty on the vehicle. I found a CPO 02 CL with 49,000 miles for 34k but that is just to much when the car is going for around 26-28k right now. Unless I put down a lot of money, I will have to cover the nagtive equity once I sell it later. I know it.
I only plan on keeping the car for about a year. No longer. I run through cars.
I dont even know if Benz dealers offer extended warranties on a 2002 vehicle since it is now 6 years old. Lets say they did and i bought the car for 34k...add another say 4k for the extended warranty and add tax and title and im looking at over 40k for this vehicle. No way! Way to much for a 6 year old car. Id rather purchase something newer if its going to work out that way.
