I currently own a 1995 E220 Coupe and love it. Its got those classic lines, huge bonnet and the best seats i have ever had the pleasure of sitting my ass on (they are HUGE!). I love the bulletproof engine and reliability. Ive had my eye on upgrading to a CL 500 for a while now. I love the looks and it just oozes class. The only thing that bugs me is the size of the engine. I do about 250 miles a week and in my E220 Coupe it costs me about £40 @ 88.5p/litre. I have been told i can expect to double that expence in the CL 500. Is it really that juicy on fuel? is it worth having it LPG converted? I have also had a look at (but not sat in) the seats and they look smaller and less lavish that my E220 coupe (more like an executive office chair than an arm chair). I have also read about the quality of mercedes benze cars not being as bullet proof as they used to be. Should i be worried?
I have both body styles 140w and 215 .here is the best made Mercedes for the quality in materials and very little plastics. My 215 has a lot of plastic and is built cheaper. They gave up quality for performance cutting weight down.I'm selling this car for $16950 IT WAS OVER $100k new. Just have it shipped !! 1858-602-7063
The 140 CL had a host of issues. The two main issues are wiring harnesses that have a a tendency to self-distruct due to the use of biodegradeable plastic and an A/C unit that has a nasty habit of needing around $4,000 thrown at it to make it work. If that's considered better, you can count me out.
I'm not necessarily defending the 215 but to say that the 140 is a better built car is not necessarily correct. With an extra 100 plus hp and much better design, I will take my 215 twin-turbo 600 over a NA 140 CL any day of the week.
Thanks for your help all... I have actually been offered a great deal on 2000W 320SL so am very tempted to opt for that. May post a new thread to gather some valuable info on that too.
well back to ur response I have both and have had them since new.My comments would really out way ur opinion if you do not have both.Because if ur talking about problems the cl600 has an oil sensing unit fault and cost 10-15k so which is worse 4k which I have never heard of nor have experienced. If you r the original owner of that cl 600 you should have recieved your campaign letter, if ur not the original owner, my! the 140 sounds like a better deal.
one last thing, I never said The newer model was worse I merely stated the materials where cheaper and the car did not feel as solid. As far as the 140 goes the 1999cl500 was the last year and almost all of your concerns where already taken care of.If anything it is the automatic seat belt and loud parktronics.
The cl 215 is a totally different car so u can't compare the 2.
