Needless to say, I hope it looks better in person. I really, really hope it looks better in person.
I think that we're now really beginning to see where Mercedes-Benz is headed without Bruno Sacco and several others around, and it doesn't seem to be a wonderful place. I'm afraid that this car resembles an Acura, a current CL-Class, a Lexus, and a Maybach, combined in exactly that order.
It's amazing that the successor to such outstanding and timeless designs as the C126, C140, and C215 could possibly turn out this way. I'm hoping that these photographs are either fake or serious misrepresentations of the final product.
That's not it. It's a decoy. We won't see the real car for a little while.
But, mark my words, that's not the new CL.

oh, I did agree, and say blah, blah, here it is. But I have new info since then.
I am afraid that it was the real thing. They released several photos today, and I am not that impressed. Maybe as the editor said, I hope it will look better in person.
There are the photos and the official press release to go with it. I love the looks of it in the photos and think that in person it will be even better, as with the S-Class. I used to dislike the S-Classu until I saw more detailed photos and stunned when I saw it in person and sat in it.
Hold on to your 215's boys and girls, cause their values just went up. The new CL looks like a BMW rear stuck on to a CLS front. This style is neither classic nor inspired. In 30 years, the 2000-2006 CL's will be regarded as the definitive coupe of the early 21st century, and will be worth a whole lot more that this sad example of the brand's flagship. Excuse me while I go kiss mine on each of those four classic headlamps.

I thoroughly agree. I just bought a new 2006 CL500 last week (traded off my 2002) because I wanted the newest of the best. After I saw pix of the new one, I realized the 215 is the best of the coupes for decades. So for me, this is a good day.
Exactly how are the four oval headlights classic? It isn't like the 4 oval headlights are a tradition of the CL.
I hope you guys realize that the designers of the CLs must have one hell of a hard time. They must try and make a car that will please all people, but that is impossible to do. You can either do something that is in no way radical and thus make no waves, either good or bad, or you can make a car that is very representive of a time with all your passion and soul; for doing that you will have people that love the car and have people that hate the car. The car has a very clean look, at the same time it exudes a muscular shape with a luxurious interior. Personally I see parts of an S-Class, with the trunk style and the interior, part of a CLS with the clean line down the side and bulging wheel wells and a front design close to that of the GL.
go to the MB germany website and you will see official pics of the new model. To everybody's disappointment, what is shown earlier in this thread IS the real production car. To me, it looks like a S class without the two backdoors. It loses the timeless, minimal, sleek and classy design of the current CL.
