former CLK320 owner and looking to upgrade to a CL
could I get some opinions on this? (from the dealer)
2003 CL500
16k miles
pretty much standard (167 sedition) except for keyless go, nav collection
looks immaculate
asking $61k.......certified preowned from the dealer - it came off a lease.
generally speaking, about how much do you think I could knock down negotiating? trying to figure out what number i should start at

That is a very difficult question since you don't know what the dealer has in it or what they look for in profit. I guess I would look for what comparable CL's are going for in your area and also take a look at

You can also look at ebay as the car you are interested in might be there. That is how I bought my '02 CL. A lot of dealers place some of there cars on this auction site. I remember when I bought mine, that is where I found it, on ebay, and them went directly to the dealer to see the car. They wanted close to $80K at the time and I told him I wanted what they would have taken on ebay. I ended up getting it for around $66K.
I don't think I could have gotten that price if I hadn't mentioned ebay (different department I guess) as I could tell the salesman that sold me the car was extremely pissed as he had another buyer on the phone during the deal that had seen the car and now wanted it. He was pissed because his commission was much higher with this other sale and he made that very clear to me.
One other thing. Get the extended warranty if you plan on keeping the car. This would be Starmark thru the dealer or possibly thru a private deal if the car already has it. These cars are far from being trouble free.

I bought a used '02 CL600 last spring (10K miles) and paid $65K (ebay). Visited the dealer upon delivery of car, did a thorough check, installed all needed software updates. Car now has 18K and best car I've owned so far.
CLs are specialty cars, so very limited market. So I'd say research your model with comparable cars online and use that information in negotiating for your price. Good luck and welcome to the forum...
