Thinking of purchasing a 2010 E550. There are two I am looking at. a RWD with 55K miles vs a 4Matic with 62K miles similar options and the RWD is about 2K $ less. I don't drive in bad weather as i have a Land Cruiser for that. What advantages are there for the all wheel vs rwd.
Where are you located? If you plan on putting the car away in bad weather then just buy the RWD model. The 4Matic is great in rain/snow. Hard to live without it once having it.
Advantages for 4Matic is the handling and control you get. Performance and MPG are not as good however you can get around in all kinds of weather with ease. The RWD is nice because of the MPG and simplicity it offers.
I will suggest Nokian Snow tires on the RWD Mercedes. That plus the weight of the car and you should be fine assuming not much change in elevation.
I am running Nokian's on the CLK right now. I will find out soon how it works.
I use Nokians exclusively on both our 4matics. It is amazing. We drive where plow trucks don't dare to go. The ML is a bit better in the snow because it has a lot more ground clearance.
Nokians on a 4Matic makes it nearly impossible to not be able to go anywhere.
