Looks like the current one is borrowed from the W211 and is running long in the tooth. BMW and Audi have comparable 6-cylinder engines with better performance and fuel economy (535i, A6 3.0T). Any idea?

You mean for the US market? Are you after the 350 CGI engine that has been available in Europe at least.
It has been available already with the 211.

Yes, I'm talking about the US. Is 350 CGI M-B's answer to BMW 535i and A6 3.0T? I've heard there's some problem with it due to the crappy fuel used in the US. So will it never make it to the US in its current form?

Why?? At this point this engine is excellent. Its not so old. Its also used in lots more than the E Class. So what if some others have more HP. This is a proven very reliable and efficied engine. If you want more power just buy a E550. Most other makes do not even offer that option
In Europe the E350CGI with direct injection has 292 HP. So they have one, but for some reason it's not available in the US. Maybe emissions or to be able to keep the very low prices.
