Hi. I just got into real estate not too long ago. I do a lot of driving. Looking to buy a E500 or E55 used. Want a V8 and I Love the E-Class. Does anyone know if there is a significant difference in the fuel mileage? I live in Canada. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
If u buy a normal E500 and compare to the E55 then YES, but if you are buying a E500 AMG pakg, then not really big gaz different. The reason is E500 AMG pakg use the same Rims and same size tires as E55. Front 245 40R18 Rear 265 35R18. The E500 AMG pkg use bigger tires and this will consume more gaz. I have the E500 AMG pkg, city 16mpg and Highway 22mpg so...... almost the same as a E55.
The difference in the rim/tire combo is hardly the reason for difference in MPGs. the E55 has the 5.5 supercharged motor, very powerful but bad on gas. mine gets 14.4 mpg as an average. My friend has a E350, plenty of power and gets 21mpg on average. consider the 350 if mpg is a major concern...the 350 has all the power you need, the 500 is fast and the 55 is ridiculeous...good luck

I'll post an exact comparison in a week...I have put 54K miles on my '04 E500, and am taking delivery of an '04 E55 on Friday, and immediately driving it about 500 miles home.
My E500 has shown as high as 24 MPG on sustained 80 MPH+ (avg) highway driving,, though I typically only get 17 MPG in daily use (46 mile commute in SoCal stop and go traffic, however). I am a fairly aggressive driver and I would assume a 'normal' driver would get one or two MPG better in the same type of traffic.
When I picked up the E500 in 2006, I drove about 1200 miles home - Chicago to San Diego - over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and on one memorable 400 mile segment (from Iowa, through Nebraska and into Colorado), I averaged 24.1 MPG at an average speed of 84 MPH, per the trip computer. I was seriously impressed.... I owned a 1995 Dinan 540i before the E500, and in 90K of driving was lucky to get 14 MPG in the same conditions, and it did not feel as strong as the E500 in daily driving.
I am expecting 14-15 MPG in the E55 from what I have read and per other E55 owners I have spoken to. There is no free lunch, MPG wise...more HP = more fuel burn.
Good luck with your decision!
Barry

Reason: typos
My modified (550+ RWHP) '06 can get 21 mpg on the freeway if I'm not in a hurry. Even 18 mpg at 80+. Heavy city is 12-14 mpg. Typical combined mileage is 16 mpg, especially if you enjoy the torque (you will).
06 E500 sport (AMG type wheels, staggered)
19mpg overall average.
22mpg straight hwy at 80mph.
27mpg straight hwy at 65mpg.
15-16mpg city (my best guess).
I always have the AC on.
I'd say 2mpg less than above for an E55 would be about right. The supercharger and larger engine take more fuel to spin.
An example is an E500 and an E350 side by side (same size, roughly same weight...flat hwy driving). The E350 with it's smaller displacement will always top the mileage of the 500 given similar driving conditions and speed. The E55 will always be a little worse.
So I just got home from picking up my '04 E55, over 400 miles in one day...about 200 m iles at 80-90 MPH on I5, almost three hours going through LA late afternoon traffic (15 mph average), and another sprint at 85 or so to San Diego.
I got, per onboard trip computer, 11.5 MPG in 60 miles of stop and go traffic; about 14 MPG during 60 miles of mixed traffic (i.e. up to 80, back down to stop, up to 80 for a few miles, back to a stop, etc - this was over the Grapevine, so factor in steeply climbing and descending terrain), and 17.4 from the 80-85 MPH stretch between OC and SD. AC was on the entire time and part of the I5 north of the Central Coast area was spent at over 100+ (quiet, don't tell anyone) with the trip computer showing 8 MPG...
I'm expecting 14-15 MPG in daily driving with the E55 - over the same roads, in 2 years of daily driving, my E500 has averaged about 17-18 MPG. Again, I have a heavy foot and am somewhet aggressive.
Your biggest problem with either car, but particularly with the E55, will be staying out of the throttle, just to hear that V8 growl. : )
My first post...forgive me if I sound like a total NEWBIE!!!
dberrym...I, too, am from San Diego and was wondering why you went all the way to Chicago to take delivery on your E55? I am in the market for an '04 - '06 E55 and was just curious. I joined this to learn about the pros and cons of this car. Thanks guys!
