From what I understand the cd changer cannot play mp3's but the head unit can, if you have it enabled. I just bought an 04 also and I found a post here with directions on how to go into the "engineers menu" on the head unit to enable mp3s. It'll play mp3 CD's OR DVD's which is nice. It won't however, read video DVD's unless someone put a Euro unit in yours, sucks.
Read this post for all you'd need to know regarding enabling mp3 and if you're lucky enough to be able to play DVD's, you can enable video in motion as well. Good luck.
yeah im dumb i cant find out how to turn on the mp3's
Can you not get into the engineering menu? Or once you're in there you can't get it to turn on? I did read in that post that some people had cars in which the command had been "updated" so to speak with software that blocked them from getting into the engineering menu.
the engineering menu is a piece of cake. i tried going into all the sub menu's i didnt touch anything as i didnt want to mess anything up. BUT i didnt see anything that showed mp3's or anything like that and i tried hitting left, *,# for 5...10...15 seconds...nothing
i did something similar like this on my c6 vette as the 05 with nav you had to put in a cd and it made it work. i figure an 04 e55 is much more advanced then a vette heh...

Hmmm, that's how I did it. I held the first button (<-) for 3 seconds, then while holding it pressed the next button (*) and now holding both for 3 more seconds, pushed the third button (#) then held all three til the 3 hidden menu soft buttons on the left side appeared. The directory says something like driverdr or something to that effect. Once in there you'll see the mp3 setting.
