Here's a one-owner 2004 E55 with the color combo and options I like, but the car has 50,000 miles. How much trouble do you think I would be getting into assuming that this car was well-maintained and has its services up to date?

Clean car. One of the photos showed a Certified Pre-Owned sticker and that signifies a good MB factory-backed warranty. If that is still in force, you will be well protected. Personally, I would not own any AMG without a warranty of some kind. Also, be wary of the 2003 and 2004 W211 Mercedes.

Kind of depends on the owners driving style... Young guy ripping it up, it's probably beat... Older guy not so concerned about speed, etc. might still be in fine shape... Best way to tell is to get the VIN and have an MB Service Manager or Service Writer run the service records to see what kind of service history it has... That should give you a good idea what shape it's in...

OFF TOPIC, but I feel you on the "" for the sold Z06. I had an 02 as well, hated to see it go!
For what it is worth, I bought the Extended Warranty on my 05 E55 right before the factory warranty expired at 50,000 miles and have driven it to nearly 60,000 miles with not a SINGLE problem. These cars are made well, but I do agree on the extended warranty as being something that it worth it - just knowing that I am covered to 100,000 miles allows me to enjoy my car to the fullest.
Also, I immediately knew my car was owned by a senior gentleman because when I hooked up the satellite service the presets were "Sinatra", "60's" and "50's". They are all just a little different now.
I would highly recommend an aftermarket warranty. I have a 2004 E55 with 42k mi. It's been a great car with next to no problems. The original warranty ran out and i got an extended Damiler warranty for five more years and 50k more mi for $2400. But the car has to have less than 48k mi to qualify. good luck.
by any accounts the car is still a baby. 50K miles on a W211... I might be concerned if it had 120K miles and no real service history then you should worry a bit. what a beauty nonetheless..
