..it wasn't answered and I do have a question regarding it. What are the options for air filters? Are K&N the best or "green" filters better? Is there tuners in Germany that make a performance air filter for the supercharged AMG's?
I agree with the snorkel mod as being advantageous but I have also read that these cars are actually 493 HP as apposed to 469 regardless of the snorkel diameter.
The reason I ask is there is a video of an M6 vs another M6 and the mod was removing the charcoal filter and putting in a performance filter. The modded car actually pulled a few cars on the stock one. I have also seen video of the M6 pulling from a Rentech E55 at higher speeds. The E55 gets a huge jump but gets reeled in at higher speeds. Getting some air flow might help....
Actually, there is very little to be gained from air filters, maybe a couple of HP, but nothing dramatic on an otherwise stock 55K. The W211 E55 does not have "charcoal filters" like the E63 or M6. It might make more of a difference on a M6, but it's been dyno proven to be of little value on the 55K cars. As far as a M6 pulling on a modified E55, not likely unless the E55 was suffering from heat soak or you're talking very high speed (or maybe the M6 is not stock?). When my car was TOTALLY stock, I pulled a couple of cars on a stock M6 from about 65 mph to over 110 mph. Might he have passed me if we continued to the 155 mph limiter? Possibly. My car made 435 RWHP stock down to the air filters. This equates to over 500 HP. 410-425 RWHP is common from a healthy 55k in any chassis, W211, R230, W220, etc. The M cars have the gearing advantage for very high speeds and little torque, so at realistic speeds on the streets, especially from a stop, I leave M cars for dead. If you really need to go fast in a 55K, do this:
1. Add pulley and tuning from reputable tuner such as VRP, Renntech, Kleemann.
2. Add cooling modifications from same.
3. Add larger 80mm throttle body and headers.
You should be at about 500 WHP and no stock M car will ever catch that.
If you still need more, there is a proven formula to take the 55K to 600 WHP without N2O (VRP) if your pocketbook can stomach the cost. Have fun.
Great response and I do agree with you on many points. The stock filters are so large that they must help with flow, no problem. If you do the any Kleemann, Renntech, Brabus, and other mods, I can see a performance air filter helping.
I should note that these videos I have seen are on M5Board.com & M6Board.com. I do really like the "M" cars but it just seems so hard for me to see an E55 getting beat so bad. Especially when I have seen quite a few run low 12's stock on stock tires. Torque rules on the street, eh? When I owned my 1987 Buick Grand National, that is what we would say. I was in the local turbo Buick club. Thanks again.
Those boards are notorious for "questionable" videos. There was/is one that shows a "stock" M6 leaving a stage 4 Kleeman E55 in the dust. Puleeeeeezzz. Either a very un-stock M6, or a wounded K4, there's no way a stock 500 HP M6 could ever hope to hang with a 640 HP E55, it's physics. There are a few stock E55's that have made into the 11's, but typically mid to low 12's with nothing more than putting foot to floor on the green. Nothing against the M car either, but you'll notice they usually either talk/show runs from a high speed roll or bring up the "wait 'till we get to the twisties" trump card. Each car has it's strengths, and in most street contests (ie: a drag race), the M cars are toast. Road racing is another story. Most BMW fans will talk about the M3 as well they should, but if I was concerned about road racing, there are several better choices than that, and I feel most M's are too rough riding for daily duty (and far too much road noise), especially the M3's. I drove a new M5 before I bought E55 and I really liked it, but again, a little stiff for a daily commuter. Add in the SMG trans in bumper to bumper traffic and it was no contest, E55 all the way. Now if I lived on a smooth twisty mountain road with little traffic that led to work, the choice probably would have been the M5, although whoever came up with I-drive should have been shot before that was allowed into production.
I do agree with you on all counts and yes the M cars do better on the "twisties" but that doesn't mean the E55 is a slouch. I did a few "twistie" roads in Sport 1 and the car was quite competent and handled the turns great, just not M5 good....but it doesn't mean the car sucks like some people say.
I have also seen the M6 vs the K4 and that is the one that boggles my mind too.
Yes Kleemann would be my first choice for upgrades. I just leased my car with full MB extended warranty. If I keep the car after the lease is up, Kleemann will get the call. It's funny to talk about modifying a 500 HP car so that you can go fasterMy 2003 C32 was quite fast in it's own right but no E55. Cheers!
