I really... really want an E55... But I hate carpayments. I dont have any at the momment and dread the thought of them.
I make pretty good money, but I would ideally love to pay cash for the E55. Reality is I will probably only be able to drum up $45k in cash, and will have to finance the rest.. But here is the problem.
I want a black exterior, with a beige or stone interior. I can get that with an E500 and 4matic with the options I want for MSRP $71,176.00 and possibly do Euro delivery and get 5% off that.
To get the same options and colors on an E55 minus the 4matic of course, will end up costing $93k becuase it requires a designo package.. And I dont think you can do Euro delivery so no 5% discount.
Since I will be financing anything above the $45k, this becomes a doubly big deal. $26k financed vs. 49k. I could probably get the 49k payed off in 2 years, but it would suck having such a high payment obligation as my cash flow is very irregular. Whereas with the E500 I could pay it off in a year easily, and then at my leisure, add to its power through Renntech, AMG years later or as money allowed.
I wondered if I could get you guys who own the E55 to tell me your thoughts on what I should do.. I prolly wont be buying one till late this year anyways... This is probably all very trivial and boring to you all but I thought I would ask for comment anyway.
What we do does not matter, you are the one who has to decide if the car is worth the debt. If you want the car that bad then get a home equity loan, if you own a home that is. The interest can be used as a tax deduction. But know this, your house is now at risk.
When you're spending that kind of money $71K, what's another $20K? Order your car just the way you want it, and by the time it comes in you'll probably have the extra Kash saved up.
Get the E55, you won't have any regrets. Easily the best all around package available bar none. World class performance, style, solidity, comfort. It can't be beat.
But you are right, there is no logical reason to buy the beast, its an emotional one that only you as an individual will have to make.
you may be able to special order the stone interior with the e55, i am not sure, but the designo package will make for a very nice looking car...
instead of ordering the e500 and tuning it for more power, you can order the e55 and go to an aftermarket tuner (Brabus, carlsson, etc.) for a custom interior (may be cheaper than designo option)
