Locking lug nut part # or availability??

Called the local dealer today and they told me that the locking lug nuts for the 2003-2004 E55 was not in their system and currently unavailable. I cannot believe that no one has locking lug nuts on their E55 here. Let me know the part # if any of you guys have these lug nuts on their car as an accessory from the dealer. Thanks.

I would think that the locking lugs for the E320/E500 should work as well. Did they give you a reason as to why those wouldn't work?

RE: Locking lug nut part # or availability??

Yeah, I told them that they were listed on the website and the parts guy said that the website isn't always accurate....usual response. I didn't inquire about the E320 or E500 as a possible match...he just said it didn't list anything for the E55. Anyone else?

RE: Locking lug nut part # or availability??

I am not sure if you looked at the lugs for the E55, but they are pretty short. I am curious if the E320/E500 lugs are that short.

Anyhow, Mercedes uses McGard... personally, I think they suck. They are difficult line up the key, and if you're in a stressful situation, it could be even more difficult. (Personally if I had a flat somewhere within 30 miles of home I would go home, get an extra wheel/tire, and change it on the side of the road, rather than using the can of flat fix, especially at the price to replace that can...) Also the way the key works and fits in the face, it tends to cause the chrome to peel after a few uses.

I would use Gorilla lugs, as I find their products to be very high quality. Strangely, they do not have a lock in the size we would need. They sell lugs in that size, but just not the locks. Or maybe they do, their catalog is a bit old. Also, the size needed, they sell Small Diameter lugs, meaning the head of the bolt is a smaller diameter than the normal 17mm. This uses a special key with a pattern (much the same as their wheel locks), and it provides the same protection that the wheel locks do. This might be a suitable solution?

Gorilla is available from Discount Tire / America's Tire Company / tires.com

RE: Locking lug nut part # or availability??

Several things to be aware of. 2003 up went to 14mm lug bolts with 14mm ball seat radius (from 12 & 12). Forget earlier model parts. Gorilla etc will sell you 14mm bolts, but as of several months ago, had not corrected the seat radius and may never because it looks good unless you compare them closely side by side or use a radius gauge ( buy a plastic drafting hole template with 15/16 dia and 1 or 1 1/16 dia and check ball in the hole amd you will see). Friendly tire store oblivious and no indication it's incorrect when installing and it is definitely not visable. Not saying it will kill you, short of full competition activity, but certainly NOT a good idea and over time will re-contour your wheel seats. Most US marketers and Pacific Rim manufacturers are absolutely unaware there are various ball sizes.
Also beware of chromed parts. These guys don't even know what Hydrogen Embrittlement is, much less heat treat their parts to cautiously avoid it. HE is what causes stress cracks months after manufacture that fail the bolt - typically the heads pop off without warning. Don't know how to assure it, but don't buy sets out of the same plating lot - not all lots will be bad - and the odds are better if you only pop a couple of heads at speed and not sets of five [xx(]. INSPECT Chrome lug bolts for missing heads often if you must use them - guess why M-B doesn't sell them ( A -their attorneys won't let them).
Want an almost sure fit, wait for the M-B part and try to get the correct p/n!

BTW - Owned & sold '99 & '00 E55 before '03 E55K - they were great "no compromise" cars, but the E55K is sooo much nicer and more civilized. Joy to drive! Safe and Happy Holidays to ALL.
