leather inserts means that the middle section of the seat is leather, the rest is a synthetic leather look-alike. leather trim means that the interior is covered almost completely in leather.
I see. So my first instinct is to assume that the leather inserts are tacky, and that if one can't afford the full leather one probably has no business trying to buy the car.

not at all. you really can't tell the difference that well. maybe a little from feel. but not by looks. have you ever seen the merc-tex material they used on the 190- and 300-class? it looked very much like older style leather and held up very well.
personally, i like cloth seats because they grip you better in hard turns.
RE: Leather inserts vs. Leather Trim: What's the difference? Pics?
Hello, I just bought an e320, and it does not come with full leather....is it possible to have this done once i pick up the car at the dealers? And if so, how much would it cost around?
-Thanks

most of owners get the full leather; only few lease owners want leather insert according to my sales.
e500 comes with full leather, e320 comes with leather insert but most of friends I know who buy this level of car will upgrade to full leather.
I sell out in Tysons Corner, VA and many ask about the "leather insert" but rarely does it become an issue. Many cant tell what is leather and what isnt. If anything, a handfull of customers ordering C-class or E320 ask for leather in my experience.
RE: Leather inserts vs. Leather Trim: What's the difference? Pics?
It's best if you fully understood the difference. With the standard interior, only the center panels are leather, the rest is MB-tex (vinyl). The optional leather trim means the panels on either side of the leather center panel, the door panels and headrests are leather but the rest of the seat is still MB-tex. You never really get full leather like the sides of the seats. They look the same to me except the door panel looks a little fancier in leather trim if you like that look. The downside of the optional leather is that the side pieces are the first to show wear (creases and eventually cracks). So if you see a 5 year old MB with leather vs. one with inserts or all MB-tex, the leather will look old and weathered (assuming a typical owner), the MB-tex will still look newish. There's no resale value item in Kelly Blue Book for optional leather nor will this bid up any higher at a Manheim Auction (what most dealers use to value used cars), so it's money thrown away, like paying extra money for a metalic color, not that it's bad, just increases your cost of ownership if you value that at all.
Personally, I would take the money and put it some other aesthetic item such as nicer wheels or a nav system. How many W211 owners pay the extra dough for the optional leather and then cheap out on wheels? Most.
