Troubleshooting E500 Engine Noise...

I have had a continued clicking sound from my '03 E500. My service rep has isolated the problem to a noisy fuel shut off valve in the mid section of the auto. It can be heard through the whole car but is most noticeable when sitting in the back seat. This is at idle with all accessories off. It can really be heard if you open the trunk and put your ear to the trunk floorboard. The dealer is saying that this is a problem on most of the new E500's, there is no service bulletin to correct this and that replacement of the part will make the same noise. Is anyone else having this problem and have you been offered a solution from your dealer.

I have exactly the same problem, except I would call it a knocking noise rather than clicking. Most noticable on the rear left seat especially if you put head back a little. I think - and I could be wrong - I staretd noticing that after they replaced the engine mounts (which of course did nothing about the engine ticking noise).

I finally got pissed enough to call MB and told them about all that. Within days they should get back to (at) me.

I hate this car. The only reason I bought it in the first place is that BMW and Lexus are changing models in 2004 and i needed a car now. I know this is my first and last mercedes.

My dealer told me to wait another year to order the new e500

Although I am only 18, my parents have owned Mercedes as long as I can remember. Back in the mid to early 90s, our cars never needed service, but there were only about half the mercedes models there were today.

Today Mercedes has a product line which is beginning to seem more diverse than Toyota, and it seems they cant get anything out the gate without serious problems. NEVER buy a Mercedes with a new chassis/modified engine in its first year/cycle of production.

Also, with serious engine noises, get at MBUSA's throat, not your dealers.

Re: My dealer told me to wait another year to order the new e500

this is a well known problem with the W211 E500. It is an engine ticking noise that should be fixed by replacing the motor mounts. the service bulletin number is SBN P-B-07.00-21D-DTB

Rock.

Had the mounts replaced right after purchasing the car. This problem is a noisy fuel shut off valve. It can be heard knocking in the back seat and trunk area. Vibrates through the entire car.

Paul appears to be right on the money. I had the mounts replaced, did not do a thing neither for ticking sound nor for the knoking/vibration problem.
