When I turn on my rear defroster, static appears on my FM radio. The static stops as soon as turn of the defroster. What could be the cause(s) of this? How can I correct the problem without replacing my rear window?
You want to check the ground connections on both the antenna amplifier and the defroster. The rfi (radio frequency interference) you are experiencing is the result of the fan turning on and there is an inadequate ground within the vehicle. Good luck.
Thank you for your reply. However, the rear window defroster does not use a fan. So a fan can not be the source of the static. The symptoms lead me to believe that the problem is antenna-related.
But I am not sure of the relationship between the defroster element and the built-in antenna. Are they in close proximity to one another? Can a break in either one be affecting the inbound FM signal?
Both the rear window defroster and the FM radio work fine independently.
