I know that there is something that tells you how many mm there is. It has something to do with vehicle inspections. You stick some type of gauge in through the wheel to determine how much pad life is left. I found this one document that really does not answer your question.
Mike T.
Today I measured the amount of pads remaining on my 09 E350 Sport. Brake wear sensors were only located on the right front and right rear.
For the right front , outer 6mm , inner 8mm
For the right rear inner and outer 6mm.
For the left front outer 6mm , inner 7mm
For the left rear inner and outer 6mm.
So it seems my pads are just about half worn , if indeed when they are new they measure 11mm.
All the rotors have a lip of about 1mm maybe less.
At this time I am projecting that this car will most likely do 4k miles a year. I think I am ok for at least two more years.
Not bad for even wear, I suggest you take the front caliper pins out, clean and polish if necessary ......to a mirror finish, pack with brake grease and reinstall. This will help the caliper to float better and produce even wear
Use the CRC black synthetic grease or the Permatex high temp ceramic grease. Neither one gets old dried out and are incredibly durable brake lubes.
