They did on the M112 and M113 engines made through 2000.
They extended the warranty to ten years and 150,000 miles over the sludging issue.
Keep in mind that Chrysler is now Fiat and is facing several yours of the most expensive recall and buyback program in the history of industry not including the $150,000,000 fine they received. There recall service was so bad that now a court has ruled that a third party will run the recalls for 3-4 yours and the court revisit the issue then to see if Fiat should be put back in charge of recalls. And all of this is just for the US market.
Fiat (also owner of Alfa, Lancia, Maserati, 90% of Ferrari) has been very successful of late. Let's see how long they manage with Chrysler.
How long did it take MB to fix the power steering hose clamp issue on the W163? There was at least one claim of a death resulting from lost steering on a curvy CA road. You won't find it because the high $ sales price also goes to feed high $ lawyers.
Anyway, I was just pleasantly surprised at the no-hassle replacement on a low-margin minivan. It is a stark contrast to the many frustrated experiences one reads about the balance shaft issue. You get the feeling that we hold MB engines up to a higher standard than MB itself.
There are issues with all the car makers right now. I do agree that the way MB is handling the M272 balance shaft issues, the fuel tank/sender leaks, the 7g trans issues, and other things is just terrible. They are acting like thieves.
A friend with an affected SL just brought me in a copy of the balance shaft class action settlement. Looks like MB is agreeing to reimburse up to "37.5% of the reasonable repair amount" up to 10 years / 125000 miles (80% for 5yrs/50K), and is accepting claims for past repairs. A little bit of justice, but I wonder if they really saved anything when they tally up the legal fees spent arguing.
I was pretty pissed when I had to have my engine fixed when I had my 2006 E350, but I am looking forward to receiving the settlement even if it is capped at 4,000. I am glad they finally fixed the issue, but it burns me the way that they went about it and ignored the problem for 2 models years.
