Replacing/upgrading side mirrors on W211?

Hi there!

So my driver side side mirror lens covering the LEDs is cracked/broken and presumably moisture has eventually settled in to make the LEDs themselves work intermittently. I get a code on the dash to this fact saying that the side mirror turn signal light is out.

No doubt that MB service shop will charge and arm and leg for P+L on this, so I'm wondering how bad of a DIY job this is. I came across upgrade kits that turn our W211 mirrors into W212 style on eBay, does anyone have any experience with these? I have decent tools and patience but no shop manuals to go by yet, are these a real pain or fairly easy to do?

Thanks in advance!

FWIW since I needed to replace the LED strip I went ahead and ordered the W212 side mirror upgrade kit for our W211s. I figure it will be 1/3 of the price to upgrade the pair than what MB will charge to fix the one unit. After I had time to play with the upgrade I'll post back and let you know how it went in case any others are interested in this down the line.

All right, so I just wrapped up getting the new W212 style mirrors installed! It was actually pretty easy and saved so much money over getting them replaced at the MB dealership. Plus, the new W212 style looks are definately pretty slick.

I'll post pics up on the site for those interested after my camera recharges. Pretty cheap way to fix your mirror housing and/or LED directional lens and get a style upgrade to boot. Those who are into W212 style conversions definately need to consider this if they haven't already.

Thumbs up

Hehe, I had to run an errand but camera was fully charged when I got home. Here are some shots I just took, I should have taken some before shots but then again I'm sure everyone knows what the stock W211 housing looks like. Hopefully these pics give a good idea of the end result, it certainly cleans up the look IMHO and is gives it a classy style.

i just ordered that grille for my black e350, and those mirrors are sick, is it just the cover that you replaced? and did it come black or did you have to paint it?

Highly recommend the grille, gives the front end a whole new look... definately sportier and gives it a more modern look. I actually just put that in yesterday and am trying to get used to not seeing the star emblem popping up from the hood, hehe...

As for the mirrors/signal, what I ordered was a new housing with the LED strip. It already came black to match the car, on eBay there were many different color options and chrome versions too. Basically all that was needed is to remove the mirror glass and remove the the original housing from the mounting frame. The new one slides right into the same mounting points and has the same wiring plug as the stock unit so just snaps right in. You do have to remove the mirror glass in order to remove/install the housing but that's pretty easy to do. It really only took about 30 mins to do and no special tools were needed.

Also, they do come with a "mannor" light at the bottom of the unit but that would require special splicing into harnesses in order to come on at night when getting in/out of the car, I opted not to hook that up as I really didn't need the feature nor wanted to start splicing into things just for that.

This was the eBay auction I got:
Mercedes LED Mirror Covers W211 E320 E500 E55 Black/b: eBay Motors (item 370360719350 end time Oct-02-10 08:48:18 PDT)

Extremely good deal for the price and definately looks awesome plus is relatively easy to install!

Great job! May I ask how did you remove the original mirrors? I am trying to fix mine and did not figure a way to disassemble the mirror housing.
